I plan to arrive in Lp on the 29th December and stay until the 2nd of January. Looking for mid range up to 30USD per night. I would like to book in advance because of the time of year. Has anyone made a prior reservation over New Year, somewhere they could recommend, who will keep a booking rather that give the room to the first person who turns up on their doorstep.

We were not there during New Years, but we had reserved a room for 5 nights last January at Xieng Mouane Guesthouse. We had made the reservation 4 weeks earlier. They were completely full the entire time we were there but kept our reservation so I think they are reliable. We did send a reconfirmation email about a week before we arrived as a courtesy. They responded and thanked us for reconfirming. They rooms are clean and pleasant, the staff are friendly and helpful and it's in a very central, but quiet location. We made our resrvation via the Travelfish web site (www.travelfish.org).

I would have reservations for darn sure, LPB fills up from Dec 24 to Jan 5.....you wont be left out in the cold, but you either wont get what or where you want, or spend a lot more or settle for a lot less...depending on whats left.
Sayo GH is nice, but the owner a tad nuts at last report....
