You better watch out, these types of questions really get flamed on Thorntree.
Often a reply will be along the lines of: How do we know what attractions you are looking for, are you into culture, treking, etc.
A suggestion would be to head off to your local travel agent and pick up a brochure or check the internet for known tours, not to do the tours, but this will give known attractions and known routes. Then if you have specific questions, post again.
But maybe some of the nicer postsers will give a more in depth reply to your question.

I suggest you get a book on the country.

I was in the south a couple of months ago and can highly recommend chilling for a few days on Don Khone in the 4000 Islands and motorbiking around the Bolaven Plateau.

Or buy a guidebook and read it first. I'm being nice ;-)

Hi,

"Often a reply will be along the lines of: How do we know what attractions you are looking for, are you into culture, treking, etc."

Serious flaming that. Forgive me for saying but it sounds more like a "nice" suggestion to the OP.

Hi,

OP I just returned from there two weeks ago. The normal activities ( Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Plain of Jars etc) are well documented. However I went into a place named Tad Lo and had a few real chill days/nights.

The bus drops you off at the road junction and you need to take a motorbike taxi to the main accommodation area. Do not be tempted to stop at the first few guesthouses/homestays you see or you will be in the middle of nowhere.

I was in the pool above the waterfall and two elephants just wandered down on their own and joined in. Saw two young otter cubs there and, all in all wished I had allowed a few more days. Will go back. Cheap accommodation, beers, food etc and a really cool all round vibe. Try it out.

Hi, I spent 3 months in Luang Prabang last fall and I loved it so much, I highly recommend that you go there. There is a lot of things do: visiting waterfalls, trekking (my favorite part), visiting temples, bicycling around town, climbing up Phousi hill in the morning to see the sunrise, going for boat rides, visiting caves and a lot more.
Also from Luang Prabang you can take a slowboat (or bus) to Nong khiaw a small village with beautiful scenery. It takes around 9 hours with slowboat and with bus 3-4 hours.
