My girlfriend and I will be in Laos from Aug. 27 till Sept. 3. We want to visit Vientiane, Vang Vieng, and Luang Prabang. We're not into the trekking or party scenes. We like the temples, museums, food, and night markets. Here's the provisional itinerary we're looking at:

Aug. 27: morning flight from BKK to Vientiane. Check out Vientiane that afternoon/evening
Aug. 28: Vientiane
Aug. 29: morning transport from Vientiane to Vang Vieng. Check out VV that afternoon/evening
Aug. 30: Vang Vieng
Aug. 31: morning transport from VV to Luang Prabang. Check out LP that afternoon/evening
Sept. 1: LP
Sept. 2: LP
Sept. 3: afternoon transport from LP to Chiang Mai

We're limited by time but are we biting off more than we can chew? We want to see cool stuff but don't want to sell ourselves short.

We could spend all of Sept. 3 in LP but that would mean losing the following day in travel as my girlfriend needs to be in Sukhothai by Sept. 4. While we're cool with 4-5 hour bus rides (just a part of life in that part of the world) we're trying to minimize eating an entire day getting from point A to point B (which is what would happen getting from LP to Sukhothai).

Any advice or insights you have would be appreciated!

Your itinerary looks fine. A week is not enough but another trip to Laos will be beneficial & pleasant. If you have the cash, flying from LP to Chiang Mai will save your hours on the bus.

Have you checked out the bus schedule for getting an afternoon bus from LP? The road from LP to Oudomxai is often under construction and travel times exceptionally slow.

I think your itinerary is fine. Some more suggestions from my experiences:

In Vientain: visit Talat Sao market (the biggest one) where they well a lot of stuff, especially silver (but consider its quality if you have deep understanding of jewelry. Walking along Mekong river bank in the afternoon, visit night market there and then spend your evening at Nam Phou fountain square, so great with live music and reasonably priced drinks, next to Kop Chai Deu - a famous restaurant (as one local told me, its name means "thank you"). Besides, in the day time, let's visit Wat Si Muang (Mother temple as the local people call). There is a special stone (about 10-20kg) and the local people believe that anyone who can move it over their heads 3 times and feel it's light, their wish will come true (I did it but failed!), visit Pha That Luang and National museum .

In Vang Vieng: travel by hot air-balloon (2 years ago it costed 80$/person/45min) in the early morning (fly on the sky at sunrise time) or at sunset time (exciting!), visit Water cave and do tubing there (adventurous feeling) and do kayaking then, visit Blue lagoon (very nice). In the evening, stop by local bar, restaurant to enjoy local food and drink, delicious and much cheaper than in Luang Prabang. In the restaurant, you can sit or even lie because of its special arrangement (chairs and tables are nearly the same as bed!)

In Luang Prabang: you can spend a half of day to walk around the city and visit different temples, the must-see one is Wat Xieng Thong. Also, you can stop by a house (quite near the temple) where they sell a lot of special paper products (books, cards, lantern, envelop....) although the price is a little more expensive than in the night market). The 1st day, sitting at Mekong river bank at sunset and have dinner then . The 2nd day, go up to Phou Si mount to see sunset (excellent view and a lot of people), so you should go there early to have a good position. In the evening, visit night market where you can buy a lot of nice fabrics at reasonable price and a number of things, enjoy local snacks, drinks and cheap buffet as well.... In day time, walking around the city, stop by different shops or restaurants will give you great experience. Besides, don't skip Tad Sea waterfall (where you can do zip lining) and some trekking to local village, and Kuang Si waterfall where you can do swimming and see black bears. One more place to visit is Pak Ou cave (a thousand of Buddhist statues).

Gluck & hope it useful!

Your plan looks good. However let double check with the bus for the real time the bus takes from Luang Prabang to Chieng Mai to ensure you arrive Sukhothai on time. On schedule it is approximately 15 hours but on real it might spend more several hours stopped on a bad section of road.

Your time in Vang Vieng is too short to do any justice to the place. If I were you I would fly from Vientiane directly to Luang Prabang. Save Vang Vieng for your next time in Lao.

Trying to get from Luang Prabang to Chiang Mai to Sukhothai in a day by road is virtually impossible, and even two days is really pushing it. You're looking at around 24 hours of bus time plus connections, border crossing, delays, etc. Meanwhile a LP-CM flight takes just an hour, then bus to Suk 5 hours.

are you flying or taking a bus? if it's a bus, does it run through muang ngeun
and not via luang namtha? WW is right. if it takes the northern route, the
road from pakmong to odomxai (as of last summer) hardly qualifies as a
goat trail anymore. asphalt missing, horrendous potholes....large buses would
only make about 5-10 kmh on that section.

Even in 2010 it was a rough, slow ride in a cramped mini van. But apart from that bit, you're on a proper sealed road. Mightnt look far on a map but its a fair hike.
