We are a family with an 8 year old daughter planning on spending 4-5 weeks backpacking in either Laos/ Cambodia/ Northern Thailand or Vietnam. We are aware that there is a very established party back pack trail which we are not interested in - we've outgrown this- any suggestions/ recommendations.

In Cambodia have a look at homestays. Most are removed from the tourist trail and are extremely family friendly. A really good way to find out about contemporary Cambodia. My suggestion is to look at
http://cambodianhomestays.webs.com/apps/links/ for a variety of possibilities depending on which areas appeal to you as you avoid the banana pancake trail.

Much as I like Vietnam, I think Laos or Cambodia are better bets; people are a lot friendlier. You ill NOT be off the established tourist trail, but there are options. I suggest that you contact Sam Veasna Center if you want to do something really unusual, you'll be camping in the middle of nowhere (not cheap though).

You be camping in the middle of nowhere-mostly to watch birds. I think that none of these countries are off the established tourist trail, but as Hanno suggests there options which will take you off the beaten path. I also that that the other visitors are a point of consideration. Whether you choose to watch wildlife or enjoy activities at a homestay those people who will be with you are going to be like-minded. In short, they came to see what is unique about the country rather than to continuously party. In short, not only the activities, but also the guests will be pleasant and informative.

I second the idea of homestays - I have stayed twice in Chi Phat for two weeks at a time and will go back and I am sure your daughter will meet lots of new friends in a safe environment (although obviously take care swimming)

Where else you go would depend on what exactly you might wish to see temples and ancient monuments (plenty throughout the countries you mention) beaches then Thailand Cambodia and vietnam all have plenty, the moutainous and tribes then northen Thailand (touristy) N, Laos and N vietnam offer some wonderful scenery

I second the idea of Laos. My daughter (then 7) and I went there and had a great time. Highlights were trekking in Luang Nam Tha and doing an elephant mahout course near Luang Nam tha.

Vietnam is nice also but a lot more pushy and crowded.
