In february 2008 I will be travelling in Cambodia for about 3-4 weeks (after about 2 months Thailand/Laos). After Cambodia I will also visit Vietnam (maybe good to know if you want to give me some advice). I am a quite experienced traveller but it’s my first time in SE Asia so it’s always good to get some good and actual advice. I don’t care about luxury (and prefer atmosphere above that): a private, clean and basic room (with fan) will be fine for me.
Here’s my global itinerary for Cambodia:

This november I am planning to travel with a khmer friend to Thailand and/or Laos. I can't really find any information concercing the visa situation for him. Somebody told me cambodian nationals don't need a visa to enter Laos. Can anyone confirm? How about Thailand? I am pretty sure he will need a visa, but can we get that on arrival? (will probably enter from Koh Kong) How much will it be and will he need other documents than his passport? If he can't get it at the border, I guess it must be…
I am currently in Phnom Penh and a few friends and I are planning a boat trip up the Mekong. We will leave in one or two days and go for 3 days 2 nights. Our times and dates are flexible. Does anybody have any advice on doing this or how to do it on a slow boat without renting our own? I have heard that you can still take a cargo boat from Kompong Cham to Kratie or Strung Treng, is this true? Let me know ASAP if you are interested :)
I was planning to stay at the hotel in Sep/Oct...until I read on the hotel website that rooms with private pools will become available from Nov. Has anyone stayed there lately who can tell me if the hotel under messy / noisy renovations currently?
I want to travel from Battabang to Ko Chang in Thailand - does anyone know a way to get to Hat Lek (border crossing on the Thai side )? what is the corresponding town/ bordrer crossing on the Cambodian side? Thanks

I have been in Asia years, but only visited Cambodia once on a rushed visit to the temples and the capitol. I have 3 good frends coming in who has never been to Asia and will spend almost all their time (or the first weeks of their time, one is coming in only fr 2 weeks) in Cambodia, obviously we will see Angkor Wat, probably for 3 days, and Phnom Penh, but otherwise, where is somewher ein Cambodia we might wanna visit for 4 days to a week that will give them a feel for the beauty and laid…
