Never lost any yet in 24yrs of going to SEA. And weve stayed in some places with dodgy doors.

Same here and in my case it is much longer than 24 years although I did have a camera stolen in Cuba but that does not mean that money never gets stolen just look at the amount of posts on this website complaining about theft. For over 35 years I never needed medical treatment while travelling but I still bought insurance and last year I needed it, just because you have never been the victim of theft in 24 years it dosnt me it will not happen tomorrow

I have cash in a money belt thingy. Never lost any, anywhere. If that happens, robbery, I would be likely to loose all cards also.
What then? Call home and ask them to send more money, simple as that.
loose you cards and then can be replaced, loose your cash and its gone for good, I am not suggesting not carrying any cash but large amounts just see to be asking for trouble
I have a "waterproof" money belt thingy, but I still put things in a zip-lok bag then in the money belt. A wet passport would be more of a problem than lost money for me.

We'll be taking a little bit of cash out with us but I find it easier to take money out from the ATM if i'm being honest. We have a fee free credit card so it costs us nothing to withdraw abroad. I feel a million times safer doing it that way rather than walking around with hundreds in cash!

Depends how you carry it and how you flash it. We often have hundreds but my husband has pockets sewn to the inside waistband of his pants. He puts it there there, takes out enough for the day then forgets about the stash. No one would ever know its there.

Why would I be worried about walking around with thousands (sometimes I have had over 10000) of dollars/euros somewhere on me? Have you never seen local business men going into banks in China, Nepal, etc? Plastic bags full of money they have. When we were in China with kids we spread out the money amongst us, ever kid had thousand euros, me & wife 2 thousand. Nothing to it, nothing got lost, nothing stolen, nobody robbed, none left behind. People have travelled everywhere, me also in plenty of places, before ATMs and plastic was even invented, cash was the only way to go and we did not turn gray from constant worry.
Surely it would be bummer if I lost the money for some strange reason, but like I said, I never travel with the last of my savings, so it would not be a total catastrophe. And I do have one or two credit cards also, just in case. I just have never used them so far to take money from ATMs. Old School, you know...

We've gone into a Laos bank and there were huge candy striped bags of notes. On the same side of the counter as customers.
I've never been robbed in 15 years of visiting SEA, but I still can't shake the feeling of "Hi, everybody, I'm a white guy with a lot of cash in my pocket and I don't speak the language and no matter what happens, I'm leaving in three days, so go ahead, stick me up, what could go wrong?"
So I spend a lot of time thinking about not getting robbed and (more likely) getting burglarized. Hiding something in an obvious spot like the AC unit, under the bed, or in the toilet tank is useful only against an otherwise-honest chambermaid who might be lured into crime by the sight of a year's wages in cash. Against an experienced thief, it is meaningless. You really want to hide something? Put in in a pair of your underwear and leave it on a heap in the floor.
