Hi,
We have 6 persons & are looking for a van to travel around SR & the Floating Village for 5 days in mid-Sep 07.
We are quoted USD35 per person and we are asked to pay additional for a tour guide.
Is USD35 reasonable or exorbitant?
Do we need tour guide to Angkor Wat? If we know where we want to go?
Thanks.

It would depend on where you are going as I presume you mean the temples as well. September is low season but 35$ for the day is not exorbitant if you are going to quite a few places. I would say 30$ is probably a farer price at this time of year for the main temple area though.
You do not need a guide if you do not want one.
Siem Reap Information

Thats sounds pretty good to me, as a tuk tuk for the day is at least $10, a taxi $20, if I recall in 2004.
A van is even larger, and with so many people, thats 8 hours at $35 divided by 6 people... $4.50 per hour, less than a dollar per hour per person....does it have AC? Thats would be nice, as its hot...
Yes the Licensed guide is optional, but money well spent of you really plan to investigate the area over 5 days, as they know all the intimate details and knowledge, and will tell many stories that are personal and direct from a Cambodian...important facet IMHO-
You may not need a van everyday though....as going to Tonle Sap lake and villages is a easy arrangement and getting a boat and driver to...you may also want to time your visit to the complex, depending on what type of entry pass and fees you wish to use....maybe just a Van for 3 days will suffice, and a 3 day pass...
Read back on this Cambodia TT for remarks, opinions and ideas for your stay, places off the beaten path and so forth...

"USD35 per person"
That's VERY expensive ($210/day!) If you said $35 for the whole van I'd say fair enough.
If you have researched the sites and generally know where you want to visit, just a driver is usually enough.

Oh....I thought $35 per day....nevermind my comments....yikes...that should include 3 meals, massages and a guide for each person.

Sorry I have miss read it.
Do you mean 35$ per person for the 5 days so 210$ which then makes it 42$ for the bus for one day? If this is the case then it is expensive so I would ask for discount or I would find another driver.
Getting around Siem Reap
Way too expensive, have a look at some of the guest house sites, they actually have the prices of tuk tuks, moto's or vans and cars on their sites that you can book from the guest house?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume either the OP misunderstood or simply typed in error. $35 for a large van per day is a reasonable cost. I have never heard of anyone asking for $35 per person.

Reading it again it looks like the offer is for USD35 per person for the 5-day duration (not per day) which means $42/day for all six people in the van. Still a tad high.

Agree with #7, paying 35USD for the van per day is ok. Regardless of whether you're 5 or 10 in the group. Never pay per person, always pay per vehicle for the whole day.
Only book the guide for the day or days you're actually going to Angkor. You don't need one to go to the sites in town. 25USD max for an English speaking guide.
