yeah, well all doctors are not that well-informed, it depends on where you are going,a specialist travel doctor might know better.

Ok, then let me second #9: For SEA, I do not know one doctor specialized in travel medicine for the tropics who does NOT recommend malaria prophylaxis - and I had many different during my travelling life! Sure, the advice would be different if you stay in PP and downtown SR - but already visiting the temples is a different story: There were heaps of mozzies around there when I visited and amongst the ones I killed myself, I could identify a couple of the Anopheles type... And it's a completely different story near the border to Thailand or Vietnam again - the Pailin-province actually is in terms of absolute and relative numbers of people contracting malaria AND dying of it one of the top malaria hotspots of this planet...
And re side effects: Consider Malarone, it may be a bit costly, but has far less side-effects than any other Malaria medicine (in fact I and most of the people I met did not experience any!) - and you can also use it as cure once you have contracted malaria. In fact I met many people who were not taking pills as prophylaxis but had a box with them to use as cure for the case that they get it. I did not do so myself, as I have had malaria before and SURELY do not want to get it a second time, does not matter what I have to do for that!
But still: Thorogh anti-bite prophylaxis surely is your best way to go!
Safe and healthy travels!

why not post this on the Health Branch where you'll get a solid answer with references. If you want to do the research yourself, go to www.cdc.gov/travel. Your physician is not well informed, as you will see.
