What great comments from all of you! Sounds like a plan. Tuk-tuk or taxi, rain or shine I'm sure it will be an amazing journey. Thank you all for your help.

Bon voyage~

Certainly a taxi would be more comfortable in the rain, but tuk-tuk is the way to go: you are part of the scenery, your shirt will dry out in in the breeze, you can take photographs on the run…

I would hate the feel of cold faux-leather of an air conditioned taxi on my sweaty back...

yeah, I love a good tuk-tuk ride! my only concern, (but not so much anymore) is taking a tuk-tuk or taxi out in the "backwoods" as a solo female traveler. sounds like not going with a group is fine in Cambodia.

cambodia is basically safe but that does not mean that you do not need to be careful. It would probably be more fun to share the trip with another person but if not remember you could hire a tuk tuk through your guesthouse or a driver they know

Watch out for bag snatchers on motorbikes in the cities, although I think it is less common now. Even Siem Reap beware of dark lanes at night, there have been a few reports of muggings. But yes Cambodia is generally pretty safe. If you stay in Guesthouses/Hostels Im sure you will meet people. If going somewhere remote then getting a tuk tuk from your guesthouse makes sense, many GHs have there own tuktuks, usually cost more.

#14 true they often do cost more but the important thing is that the drivers are known to the guesthouse and whilst they can not prevent the bag snatcher they will always look after you

Yes that is what I was implying. But my experience was the one from the GH was the worst, after each temple he was never to be seen, he was asleep, you had to go and find him among all the tuktuks, then he took us to expensive restaurant for commission, the one we got down the road from the GH was great, always waiting for us, always happy, took us to cheap places to eat and he was $5 less. So don't always think the ones on the street are worse.

Many tuktuks are now fitted with metal bars at the sides (sounds horrible but really looks OK !). Sometimes innovative and even cheaper solutions have been found ! Extreme scaremongers will tell you not to carry a bag at all on an evening. Everybody is different but I never felt threatened at all and never experienced a single attempt of theft. Common sense dictates carrying your body bag on the side of your body away from the road and have it in the middle of the tuktuk seat and not at the side or on your knees.

"Remote locations" is truly subjective, you are unlikely to be alone.

Every group has its own dynamics, if you can't see the idiot then it's probably you.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think :-D

I do not think that the ones on the street are bad or worse and agree that they are often more likely to be better but lets remember that the poster was expressing concerns as a solo female.

I think the main thing for a single girl is take a driver that she can in someway vouch for or know that he could be identified in the unlikely event of a problem. It does not have to be the guest house. Asking other guests about the drivers can be a useful way of knowing if they are likely to be good or bad as are recommendations.

As a single female (hypothetically,I am neither ;-) I would take a tuktuk from a guesthouse.

99% of those on the street will be fine, and will be cheaper (a bit)....but it is another level of safety if your driver is working for your accommodation.Worth a couple of dollars more IMHO......
