(This is kind of cross-posted on the middle east branch)

Hi everyone! Please don't harass me for asking this, but I'm hoping to give my mother a little peace of mind with regards to my upcoming expeditions in South East Asia and my own cockiness isn't much of an assurance for her at the moment. She has friends who have spent time living and working in Cambodia, and the stories they tell seem to indicate that Cambodia is not a safe place for a solo 27 year old kiwi chick to be wandering through independently. I am of a distinctly different opinion.

So the question is: Aside from usual security precautions (theft, scams, watching where you're getting your water from) is it safe to travel independently in Cambodia? Or should I expect to be constantly looking over my shoulder?

Also, anyone know a good place to get a barbequed rat?

Anything you can say to assure my mother would be most appreciated. This also goes for other countries in SEA since they'll probably be the next targets :) If you've lived in the country for a length of time... even better.

Thanks everyone.

Ive lived here a few years and never had the slighteset problem, the most dangerous thing is the traffic. My mother has been to visit and didnt have any safety problems, just got a bit bored with being asked if she wanted a taxi, or to buy a book, etc

I know they eat them in the countryside but Ive never seen them here, Ive seen them at markets in Laos.

Was there 2 years ago (solo female) am going again next month. Great place, no worries- you seem to have already listed the dangers and precautions. The only rat I saw was in my guesthouse, but I didn't have time to barbecue it. Looked nice 'n juicy though...

The biggest danger in Siem Reap is being trampled by the old ladies in the large Asian tour groups waddling like little ducks behind the tour leader and his megaphone.

I've been off and on in Siem Reap for nearly ten years. Quite safe. Even my wife who is Thai, feels safer here than in her native Bangkok.

You can get barbecued mouse in Siem Reap on the road to Phnom Krom.
It's safe to travel around Cambodia.
Wait for dissenting views :)

If its for your mum and sister then I'll keep my mouth shut - dramas are usually at night out of tourist hot spots (usually).

BTW - plenty of barbequed dog around if you can't find your rat but strangely enough its usually only the black dogs that get eaten - damn racists.

Seim Reap is very dangerous-

You will be accosted by small children selling post cards and books

Cambodia is like the rest of SE Asia, I consider very safe for a solo female traveller....you think your the 1st solo female to go to Cambodia, about 10,000 people visit per month, they cant all be men with muscles?

In fact, I have not seen or hear of any reports of muggings/issues against a woman in Cambodia in years....the usual fights in PP in bars at late nite discos is about it....go figure...drunk blokes and soldiers not getting along hahaha
