Hi, I'm going to offer the tuk tuk driver that picked me up from the airport $50 to take me around Angkor Wat for 3 days. One of these days will include a sunrise. Is this a fair price? It adds up to $15 for a normal full day and $20 for the full day with sunrise. Also, should I pay him at the very end or do I give say half/third to him at the start? Thanks

i'm a bit of a "softie" with this kind of things. the way i see it, a couple of dollars more mean much more to a local (in cambodia or in any other 3rd world country) who has to fight everyday to get enough food for his family not to get hungry, than it means to me.

i would talk to the tuk-tuk driver and agree with him on a price that you are happy to pay for and that he agrees too. as for the "prepayment". you "normally" pay at the end, but i would ask him after the first day if he would like you to pay for the day now or not.

if you are happy with your driver, a tip will be of course much appreciated. have a great time in siem reap, wish i was there :-).

$50 is a fair, normal price for a 3 day stint which does not include the outlaying temples. You can ask the driver if he wants you to pay a the end of each day or the full amount at the end. Our driver wanted us to pay (4 days, 2 of them long, total $90) the full amount at the end of the full package. Paying upfront is not the norm, paying after each day would be fine.

I definitely wouldn't pay upfront, maybe some each day or all at the end. Don't offer anything, ask his price first because if he's any good at haggling, he'll work you up, whereas you can work him down from his first price.

We had a guide and driver. Our driver liked to be paid daily but our guide was okay with being paid at the end. Outstanding guide and driver, we were amazed how inexpensive it was.

I think 50 dollars for three days is a reasonable price for you. As to when he needs the money, that will depend on him, he might need it right after the first day to buy food for his family or whatever. A lot of Cambodian people live day to day. The vast majority are honest people, therefore I wouldn't be too paranoid about paying him even up front.
