My bad, I should have said a few hours. I guess 4 - 5 hours would be a better estimation.

Good advise above, get an Adventure Cambodia guide book, consider DancingRoads or rent a bike in Phnom Penh. Not recommended to go by yourself.

good number of options are also detailed on my blog, but a little dated now.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

I think what I would like to do is to get on some interesting roads (i.e. non-tarmac roads without tourist buses) and see some nice places while on the bike. I wouldn't mind a guide. Don't want to go back home minus a leg... But I would like to drive myself, that's part of the adventure!

Does anyone know anything about the area directly west from Phnom Pehn (near Tasal in the Kampong Speu province)? I see on maps that there are some big mountains +/-100km from Phnom Pehn. Surely that would be a great place to explore?

Otherwise, which recommendable areas are relatively close to Phnom Pehn? Where is "Bokor Hill Station"? East? South?

Now, let me dig into those website immediately! Just hope my boss doesn't bust me...

Bokor is on a plateau west of Kampot city. It takes about 2 hours on a dirtbike to get up there from Kampot. Kampots about 3.5 hours south of Phnom Penh. The road up through the jungle is in poor condition, but its a great dive. On a dirtbike you can drive around many of the ruts and avoid a lot of the bumps that people have to endure on 4 wheels. Its well worth the time, Id recommend staying up there, but bring some food as there isn't much to eat up there other than packet noodles.

No tourist has ever had an incident involving landmines, the only people who harp on about that are drama-queens who have been reading too many out-of-date travel guides.

The area west of PP is indeed a good idea. You could consider visiting the hot springs in Kampong Speu, the trip takes you through Aural Wildlife Sanctuary and close to Cambodia's highest mountain. There are also Suy indigenous communities around there.

From the hot springs you could ride norths along the wildlife sanctuary into Kg Chhnang, very nice new dirt roads with beautiful mountain views along your way. You could spend a night in Kg chhnang town and the next day take a ferry to cross to the island and do a round trip there. There are virtually no cars, road good all year around, beautiful landscape including 3 pre-Angkor temples.

Bokor is a good idea, too. You could ride to Kampot and up the mountain in one day, take in some of the sights the next day and ride down again.

You could also consider visiting Kratie. There are now nice roads on both sides of the Mekong between Kg cham and kratie, so no need for backtracking. Its a lot of riding though for 2 days and roads along the Mekong tend to be flooded now, at least on the eastern bank.

regarding Motorcycle tours in Cambodia i must relate what recently happened to us: an outfit who blatantly oversells itself (Red Raid Tours - www.motorcycletourscambodia.com); left us stranded at night on a highly dangerous road on bikes with totally unsuitable headlights (xr250's); a follow-up car without the correct equipment to change its own flat tire (!) and a crew that did not even bother to read the Lonely Planet guide for the most basic Cambodian tourism information; after extensive travel & adventure experiences and 38 years of independent living in SE Asia (not expats), this is the worst we have ever experienced - to stay away except if you want to put your lives at risk and overspend doing so
