Hi,

I'm heading off to Cambodia end of the year and would like to go for an off-road motorbike trip in the jungles/hills near Angkor. Say for a day or two.

Anyone got any info, or done something similar? Would Angkor be a good spot to try this? I suppose this being Cambodia, a license is not necessary?

Thanks

Hi,

I just got back from Siam Riep (Angkor). It is no longer possible for foreigners to rent motorbikes in that area. This is a new law recently passed. The best you can do is a electric bike (ya I know, kinda lame).

Thx for the warning!

Do you know any other areas in Cambodia where someone can do such a bike trip?

Extremely dangerous as well. You don't want to be off-road (I think you mean the purist off road don't you?) in Cambodia. The roads are safe enough, but off-road you are running the danger of mines and UXO. I realise most of the major places have been cleared around Angkor, but the countryside is still littered with the things. If you roll into any northern town and see a de-mining unit you will understand. Just talk to the guys and they will give you the low-down.

Do not go on unmarked trails at all. It would be extremely foolhardy. If you mean 'off-road' to be away from the normal tourist areas but still on the roads which the locals use, then go for it.

You can rent a motorcycle at Phnom Penh and ride to Siem Reap. It just a couple of hours ride away. If you just want a short ride, you can attempt a 2 day 1 night trip to Bokor Hill Station near Phnom Penh. Basically, there are lots of possible rides you can consider. Check out Adventure Cambodia by Matt Jacobson. It is an excellent travel guidebook on motorcycling in Cambodia. I also attempted a Northeast Cambodia ride, passing through Kampong Cham, Rattanakiri and Sen Monorom.

Why don't you hire a moto driver and head off with him? It's going to be very cheap anyway, and he will be able to help you with everything. Driving through the cambodian countryside can be really dangerous, if you don't know the roads. I did it a few months ago for a few days and it was the trip of my life! I went to Kompong Thom, Preah Vihear, Ko Ker, back to SR. It was unforgettable.

Sure, myself and a lot of my friends have been tearing around the countryside in Cambodia for years, and nobody has ever been blown up. Only once did anyone almost drive into a minefield, and that was in Western Battambang near the border.

Yeah, if you kept your bike at over 150kph for two hours through all the traffic. Otherwise good ideas.

Check this guy out for motorbike trips to the boonies - Heang.
He can also hook you up for bike rentals.
