does anyone have any comments on either of these places? we'll be heading over that way in the second half of feb. but have heard mixed reports on kampot.. so we're toying wih the idea of skipping it for mondulkiri. any adivce would be helpful!
thanks :-)

Mondulkiri and Kampot are my two favourite provinces in Cambodia; Kampot is good if you're a bit shorter on time as obviously it's a 170km rather than a 400km journey each way. Kampot highlights: Bokor, Kep, gorgeous river views, coast and seafood, Rabbit Island. Mondulkiri: rolling hills, cooler climes, hilltribes. I love both but would say that Kampot has a larger range of things to do evenif you don't have your own wheels and more on offer foodwise; Mondulkiri is good for somewhere a bit different to the rest of Cambodia but better if you have your own transport for exploring...
i went to both places last year and really enjoyed them, i did an elephant trek in mondulkiri, that was really cool, just me my 2 mates, the guide and the elephant, we did 2 days and 1 night in the jungle, if i did it again i'd do 3 or 4 nights in the jungle. in kampot i stayed overnight at bokor, also worth doing but take your own eatables (and booze if you want it), they only serve pot noodles up there. on the way up to bokor you get to walk through the forest and maybe see some gibbons(we did), this walk takes an hour or so, i would have prefered longer, i'm sure if you spoke to the guide in advance you could arrange a longer walk. i'm hoping to make it back there early next year.

I would recommend Mondulkiri, hands down. Kampot is nice, but it's not incredibly different from the rest of Cambodia. Northeastern Cambodia has to be one of the most fascinating places I've ever been to, period.

The relatively new road to Senmonorom has really opened up the area. It is ¨for real¨frontier and as interesting to experience as anything in my recent travels. GREAT people, as in all of Cambodia!

Its no suprise to read differing reports, we each have our own ideas of what we need out of a place, i love the whole country, but choose to live in Kool Kampot as it suits me. Just dont come expecting a S'nukville type scene.
I haven't been to Mondulkiri yet, but I absolutely love Kampot, mostly for the same reasons dancingroads supplied. Another reason for me was a night out with my moto driver at a clandestine karaoke bar singing bad songs that my driver wanted me to sing--Hotel California was, of course, one of the selections.
