This is a long shot, but does anyone know of any opportunities for volunteering in Cambodia or SE Asia for in the legal capacity? I'm a first year American law student and I was looking for something about 2 weeks long in late December. I know I'm probably not of much use now because i have no experience, and it's only 2 weeks, but anything you guys know about would be helpful. I heard some bad stories when I was in Cambodia before about sketchy volunteer organizations, so if anyone has any advice about what to avoid that would be helpful too.

I've got one khmer friend who works for an NGO that helps victims of land grabs and another who is just starting at an office his college professor is opening up. Let me know your email and if/how much you want to pay and I'll forward the info to my friends. My friends are fairly well off and aren't interested in your money but maybe it'll influence their bosses.

Thanks k1d, before I send you the email, I've never heard of volunteers having to pay the organizations anything, if I pay to volunteer then I guess its not really volunteering anymore, :) Well, I'm still interested though and I'll get back to you.

Hi There,
Have a look at #3 on this thread; Good Causes & Volunteer Opportunities in South-East Asia it gives links to many organisations in Cambodia.

Good Luck :)

Is that a joke, are you seriously asking for a bribe to help combat corruption? Dear me.

Just two weeks, no experience in the area, presumably not fluent in any local languages. What would they possibly do with you without spending the whole time showingyou around, other than ask you to carry boxes or dust? What would an organization in the U.S., for example, do in an equivalent situation? What is your objective? To learn about the local legal systems or to help a worthwhile cause? If you cannot donate money, you might find someplace that would like you to just visit patients in a hospital or orphanage. You have nothing to lose by checking the sites mentioned above. Otherwise, enjoy your trip for the whole time and do random acts of kindness, even pick up some litter, as you make your way around.
