Hello. In October (07) I shall be travelling to Phnom Penh alone to volunteer for one month before setting off on my travels. Does anyone have a good, cheap, friendly guesthouse they could recommend? I am looking for somewhere with clean rooms, bathroom and with a cool bar/chill out area where I might meet other travellers.
Also, is it better to stay in the lake area or near the riverfront?
Many thanks x

I think you would be pleased with Okay guesthouse. Their rooms are generally a good value, there is a restaurant downstairs and a large youngish crowd goes through there. There are bars literally everywhere in PP, so that is not a problem.
I would avoid the lake unless you dont mind a slum-like weird hippy place. It's okay to visit, but I have stayed there, and it's not all that safe. By not safe I mostly mean your possessions such as cameras, money, passport etc.
Have anyone stayed at Top Banana before? Saw a few good reviews on this guesthouse.
Thanks #1 for the feedback on Okay guesthouse. It is one of the guesthouses I am looking at..

I agreed with #1 that you it's best you avoid the lake area. It's nice to go over for dinner but doesn't look safe. The whole area looks fire hazard. I stayed near the river front in Oct'06 & loved it.

We were in Phnom Penh recently. Couldn't fault Last Home Guesthouse for value for money rooms, location, and good, cheap Khmer food.

Dara Reangsey Hotel is IMHO the best option.
http://www.darareangsey.com/ is the web adress. I always payed about
$ 8 / night for a fan room. Good, cheap restaurant inside.
I once met a German traveller, who forgot his bag with all his stuff, (Money, CCard,
Camera etc) except for his clothes, to take out of a (unlicensed) taxi.
It took the staff one day to find out who and where the taxidriver was,
and they arranged to get his stuff back.
Never saw such a desperate and happy man in only 24 hours.
This hotel is also recommended by andybrouwer.co.uk , a website with much info about PP
and all cities of Cambodia.
Kind regards,
Hans.
