hi
Can anyone tell me whether it is relatively easy to get transport from Siem Reap to String Treng in cambodia and cross into laos via the unoffical crossing at voen Kham? Alternatively i am thinking of flying directly from siem reap to Vientiane but then am conscious that if i do this that i wont really have the time to backtrack and go south of vientiane. People who have travelled there, what do you think are the must sees in Laos. I was think of Luang prabang and maybe muang sing and then leave via Huay xia for north Thailand.
re visa, can i presume correctly that i can get a 2 week one when in siem reap
Can anyone please advise?? everything appreciated!
Anne.
cheers.

The border crossing is easy. I got a bus from Phnom Penh so I don't know if there are direct buses from SR but it'll be easy enough to find out. When you arrive in Stung Treng there will be people at the bus station offering tickets across the border so you can negotiate with them. It is in the middle of nowhere and so there aren't any mototaxis so it is best to get a trip that takes you all the way to the 4000 islands and then you can make your own arrangements from there. I also got my visa in PP (you get 30 or 60 days) but I assume there are agents in SR that can get you a visa, may take a few days.
Laos is my favourite country I have every visited and there are so many places I can recommend, it depends how much time you have. Luang Nam Tha is lovely if you like trekking. If you're going to Huay Xai I highly recommend www.gibbonx.org

Anne27 - I humbly suggest you post your Lao questions on that branch. There are many very informative folks there and you'll no doubt get good responses.
Have a great trip!

No direct transport from Siem Reap to Stung Treng or the border. You'll have to change in Kampong Cham. If you decide on flying, you needn't fly to Vientiane. You could also just fly to Pakse. VOA, 30 days available at the airport there.
Must sees in Laos: All of the south, the overland route from Vientiane to Luang Pabang, if possible include a stopover in one of the small towns along the way (Kasi and/or Phu Khun), LP itself, I liked Udom Xai and Phongsali.

I understand there are direct flights between Siem Reap and Pakse. From Pakse it's not far to Si Phan Don.
