can australian dollars be used as payment in cambodia and also for vietnam, or is it only $US? i do have some 'old' $US dollars which are crisp and undamaged but 7 years old. if you can't use them in cambodia and vietnam, can you and where can you, exchange them in australia for more recent dated currency? thank you.

Certain large hotels will accept Australian currency but not many. Just bring US or your keycard. The age of the notes is not important at all however the quality is. If the note has a tear in it it may be harder to use.

You can change them easily to USD in both countries, or Dong in Vietnam (the USD is the de-facto currency for tourists in Cambodia); but few locals will accept them. The exchange rate will not necessarily be very good (the currency is little traded on the streets in either country).

I have changed aussie dollars at a bank near the Hoan Kiem Lake....rate was the going rate.

off teh topic slightly, but i think comments about the quality of us currency notes are a little exaggerated, certainly for lower denoms $1 and $5 ...... i was often given very poor quality notes as change and used them quite easily around the place ..... the atm's there spit out nice new ones though .....

Easily in Vietnam and also in Cambodia at the bank down by the riverside.

In Cambodia you will be able to exchange Aus. dollars at most of the gold shops. In Vietnam change them at the ANZ Royal bank, but it is very hard to use them on the street anywhere.

Think #6 has it reversed. Use the Gold shops in Vietnam - ANZ Royal Bank in Cambodia.

The ANZ Bank (which owns 50% of ANZ Royal; a Cambodian Bank) is in Vietnam - and gold shops will change foreign currency, including AUD.

The answer to the OP's question
Quote

can australian dollars be used as payment in cambodia and also for vietnam

is - No - you can not easily use them; but you can easily change the AUD into Dong in Vietnam (or USD if you wish), or into USD in Cambodia - and those currencies can be used as payment.

You'll get a lousy rate if you pay in A$. Change them to USD if you must. I recommend using a bank card to withdraw either local currency in Vietnam or USD in Cambodia.

Don't banks do that in Australia?

Actually most of the gold shops in Cambodia double as money changers and usually offer good rates... in fact sometimes better than the banks (the one I used last turned on the business channel to check the exchange rate first before making the transaction)
