Pchhum Beun is the time When Buddists believe that the gates of Hell are opened for the souls to be released before they get reborn again-apparently there is quite some "down time" from the time of death until rebirth. At lease that's the story they tell in our village.
But like Christmas and Easter in western countries, it is primarily a good reason for families to be reunited.
