No, the middle of May is not a good time, it's extremely hot.
The good time is November-February.

There's a good chance that your flight to Cambodia will stop in Bangkok or Saigon . You can spend 2-3 nights there, then 3-4 nights in Siem Reap, then 2-3 nights in Phnom Penh.

If you are a single guy who likes drinking, Phnom Penh is a good destination, there are a lot of great bars and every night is a party.

I love Cambodia, but for the average first time tourist, 7 days is enough, I wouldn't bother with Kampot or Battambang, I think you'd find Bangkok or Saigon more exciting.

You can easily fly Bangkok-Siem Reap-Phnom Penh-Bangkok, don't bother with the buses, the bus trips are long and not terribly scenic.

For my money, given its your first journey here, fly into SR, do the tourist circuit, fly to Sihanoukville (Bassaka air ($150), visit the beaches, then, get a taxi to PP ($65). See in and around PP for a few days and then fly back SR for the journey home.

You don't need other countries to fill in time.

Forgot to include, don't go in summer- you'll fry like an egg on the pavement (I'm here now and it's the hottest that the locals can remember for a long time). Summer will be worse.

The end of the monsoon can be an interesting time, roads can flood, downpours happen and it keeps some of the tourist crowds away. It's my favourite time.

In response to zoltan there really is no summer here; in fact, the end of dry season and the beginning of rainy season correspond to our calendar months of spring, when it is the hottest. I am here now and it is hot, but I have been here for 17 years and it is a fallacy to compare their seasons with ours. Because of the rains and cloud cover it will cool down compared to current temperatures. But instead of heat it will provide its unique versions of climatic misery. So, now you will fry like an egg, in the so-called summer you will be poached.

I totally agree with this, I found the months June-September the worst, because it's not only really hot, but also humid, combine the two and its a killer.

Ok so in that case i may have to look elsewhere
Will japan/china and Malayasia be the same in June as well?

Of course not, you have to look at each destination individually, even cities within a country have different climates, especially a huge country like China where different cities have drastically different climates. Just do a bit of research on Wikipedia, all the cities have climate graphs.
