Hello all,
It happend to work out that we will be in Siem Reap for the Bon Um Tuk festival in Nov. I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions on what part of the city to stay in during this time or names of particular accomodations. Maybe something with a view of the river? I have never been to Siem Reap before so I am not familiar with the city nor have experienced the Bon Um Tuk festival. Mainly we are staying at low budget accomodations throughout our trip but we would be willing to spring for something a bit nicer if it would be worth it. Thanks for any help in advance! Oh and there are 3 of us in our mid-20s.

I think the stretch of the river with the boat races is from the bridge over NR6 down to the bridge at the Riviera Hotel (could be longer but I doubt it). Was on the roof of one of the buildings close to the river today and couldn't see a bit of water because of the foliage of the trees lining the river. So not much point in getting a 'river- view' room.

Good to know, thanks for the information

There are rooms on the riverfront with a pretty good view of the races, but during the three days of races the riverfront is completely jammed with thousands of people and whatnot. It's very difficult to move about or get in and out of the area. Which is just fine for participating in the festivities, but I don't think I'd want to be trapped in my hotel like that. I think I would prefer to stay somewhere off the riverfront and go down there when I wanted to. Sit upstairs at a restaurant like the FCC to watch the races.

Agree with FP if in Phnom Penh. There, a room with a river view is the best way to see the races (if far enough up). Or on the roof of the FCC with a cold one. Get there early!

I didn't read carefully. My advice regards Phnom Penh, not Siem Reap.

we may actually be back in PP by the 25th so the PP info is still useful. Thanks for all the info, I have a better sense of both what the festival is like and where to stay.
