you should not miss drinking beer at kios in front of Losari Beach, South Sulawesi | 1
Well......... You probably should not miss a funeral ceremony in Tana Toraja. | 2
Tana Toraja region centered on Rantepao (Central Sulawesi); Mamasa and the trek between Mamasa and Bittuang in the Tana Toraja Region of Central Sulawesi; Bunaken island and other islands (off Manado) in North Eastern Sulawesi for diving and snorkling; Kadidiri Island and/or Taipi Island in the Togian Islands Chain located in Tomini Bay north of Ampana (Eastern part of Central Sulawesi) for diving and snorkling; Tanjung Karang Beach (near the town of Donggala and near the city of Palu in the western part of Central Sulawesi) for friendly village and excellent diving and snorkling --- this is the "real" Indonesia. These are the highlights | 3
Tukan Besi island if you have enough time | 4
Makassar - try the Ikan Bakar | 5
Dangdut concert in Makassar (maybe on outdoor stage at Pualum Restaurant on waterfront esplanade). The best Dangdut I have heard in Indonesia. The Makassarese love their music. | 6
Tanah Toraja is a must. Also the surroundings of Makassar is worth to visit. Bira and Malino are nice places to vbisit in South Sulawesi. Better to ask Dodo for for help. He is very helpful and knows everything about South Sulawesi. He also can give you information about places to stay and eat. (donow77@hotmail.com) | 7

If you like snorkeling or diving, go down to Bira, few hours south of Ujung Pandang. AMAZING visibility! One of the great, under-rated, under water environments in Indonesia. And a very shallow, flat reef, going out to a sheer drop off. Sharks, turtles, dolphins ... | 9
#9 We will be in Sulawesi for month,Aug/ sep and were planing to spend the last few days at Bira before flying home but had conflicting reports ranging from the very good to the awful ,Any more info?? Thanks... | 10
I'll echo the fact that Dodo is a great resouce in Makassar- he can help you with local transportation to/from Toraja, put you up if you need a place to stay in Makassar, etc. To answer the original question of what not to miss in Sulawesi, I'd have to put Tana Toraja on the list. I've traveled extensively in SE Asia and this was one of the most memorable, fascinating and beautiful places I've ever visited. If you do head to Tana Toraja, look up Daud Rapa as a guide. He guided me on a three-day trip through Toraja in July, and it was because of him that my visit was so incredible. He's the best guide I've ever had, and I've used many over the years. He is Torajan and his knowledge of the local culture is incredible. His English is also superb. He also speaks some French and a few other languages, I believe. Also a super-friendly guy who is well-liked by locals (which makes a big difference when you're at cultural events like funerals). His email is daudtoraja2003@yahoo.com and phone is +62-85242-177888. If you're in Indonesia, you drop the 62 (country code) obviously and add a leading "0" I believe. Enjoy your trip! | 11
