What's thebest airlines to use to get there? Air Asia only flies to Denpasar (how come it lists that flight as a 3hr flight btw).. is there an airline that goes straight to Mataram? Or a good connection route through Denpasar or elsewhere?
Thanks in advance.

Merpati flies KL-Mataram via Surabaya, but it may still be cheaper to fly with Air Asia from KL to Jakarta or Bali, and connect to Mataram from there.
Use this site to look up possible connections - not fares though.

- Merpati as above (they have a ticketing office in KL's Wisma HLA building)
- Air Asia to Denpasar/Bali then short hop by Merpati or Transnusa/Trigana to Mataram
On arrival in Bali you could just walk over to the domestic terminal and ask around for the first flight there - last planes around 5/6pm. Tickets around 300.000Rp incl tax. I prefer the well-kept Transnusa/Trigana ATR prop planes to Merpati's flying coffins. You can phone Trigana to reserve a ticket, and get the Merpati one in advance from KL (but they charge much more).
To get to the Gilis from Mataram:
- if you arrive in the evening, take a taxi to Senggigi, spend the night and take the 9am Perama boat direct from there to the Gilis.
- arrive noon/afternoon: taxi to Bangsal, then ignore all the nasty touts and walk to the booking office (obvious) near the beach and either get on the first public boat (cheap but irregular) or charter a boat (not too expensive)
Another option: on Bali go to Padangbai (east coast town, Perama bus from Kuta at 10am or taxi) and get on the 1.30pm Perama tourist boat direct to the Gilis. Gets you there around 5-6pm, cheaper than flyingtaxiboat.
Don't take the Mataram or Bali prepaid airport taxis - walk 200m to the main road and hail any blue BlueBird taxi (lots around) - they use metres and charge much much less on both islands.
