Snorkeling Pulau Weh Sabang (with children)

Country forums / South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula / Indonesia

Hi all, having come back from a fantastic trip to Sumatra I just wanted to let the world know that we did a great snorkeling trip on Pulau Weh (more often referred to as Sabang bij the locals) with a guide named Andy. He took us to 4 completely different spots, all by boat, after picking us up from Freddies by becak. We went to the coral garden near Iboih, to Rubia Island (many fish), to a spot that had huge shoals of sardines that we could swim with, and to the underwater volcano (which is hard to find on your own). Andy speaks very good English and was particularly great with our kids. The youngest of them can't really swim yet but with the appropriate floating devices she could still join us. He took great care of her so that mom and dad could venture out on their own for a bit. Andy brought fruit and water (but the water comes in those disposable single-use cups like it does everywhere in Sumatra, so please please bring your reusable bottle). We had lunch in one of the restaurants on Rubia Island.

Bring lots of sunscreen and t-shirt & shorts that you can wear while snorkeling; if you are fair-skinned, even factor 30 will not protect your shoulders and bum while snorkeling in Pulau Weh. Other than that, modesty is appreciated in this part of the world.

Andy is a great guide and generally a nice and thoughtful person who works hard and I hope he can grow his business (which is why I am writing this). You can contact him easily through Whattsap. His number is posted in some of the Tripadvisor reviews for Freddies place (but you don't need to stay at Freddies to go on a trip with Andy).

Thanks for listening!
