Does anybody know how easy it is to get from Penang to Ko Pha Ngan and what the best route is? I'm looking at getting their view boat and overland in the quickest time possible. I'm going to be attempting it at the end of September.
Looking at the guides it would seem best to go back over to the peninsula and take a train or bus up from Butterworth into Thailand. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Getting from Penang to Ko Pha Ngan via boat means going all the way around Singapore (or via the Atlantic Ocean and then north around the top of Russia). You'd have to own or rent your own boat.
The guides you have consulted are correct. You can get a train from Butterworth to Surat Thani and thence a ferry to the Isle of Drunken Swedes.
Minibus to Surat Thani (usually changing to another one in Hat Yai).
Once in ST, either transfer out to the Don Sak pier for a day boat to Ko Pha Ngan, or what I would do is time your journey to arrive in ST early evening, enjoy a good pizza and a beer at the Italian restaurant on the waterfront there, then take the night boat to Ko Pha Ngan from Ban Don pier in the centre of Surat Thani. The boat leaves around 11pm and arrives KPN around 6.30am the next morning.
