malaria meds for Puerto Galera??????

Country forums / South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula / Philippines

I am sitting here in Manila getting eaten by mosquitoes and it suddenly occurred to me - do I need to take any prophylactics when I am in Peurto Galera for 5 days? I had a bit of a look and Mindoro is a risk area from Malaria!
I'm very paranoid as I have already had Dengue and Ross river fever before (I got both at home in oz, not while traveling) and really am sick of mosquito borne viruses
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

Hi, i found the the spray call 'OFF' from the pharmacy's works a treat to fend off the mozzy's, just give a small spray over your legs and arms then rub it in a bit, this should surfice, remembering to wash your hands after.
There is no malaria as i know of in Puerto Galera, but if it has been raining then there could be the risk of dengy mozzy's around which is quite common.

If your diving or going to learn to dive, you picked one of the best spots on the planet to do it, but dive with a good dive shop, such as Asia Divers on Small la laguna beach. Because there are strong currents around and if the dive shop gets it wrong you could end up surfacing at Cebu..or not surfacing at all, but what you will find under the sea will be worth the effort, fish galore and colours you could not describe they are that vibarant on the critters.

The El Galleon resort part of the Asia divers set up has the niceist bar for slurping after diving called The Point, it is the magnet for early birds who like happy hour cocktails, well recomended.
Now i'm getting itchy feet again thinking about it !

Malaria is confined to the southern islands such as palawan, no malaria in mindoro where PG is nor the mainland for that matter. Denge is very rare but the best protection is to stop the mosquitos biting you in the first place so use a repellant and also wash your feet as they are attracted to the smell

Strange. I rarely get bitten by mosquitoes in Manila.

Like Crop I rarely (never) get bitten by mozzies in Manila, and had no great prob in PG (but did use off lotion and mozzie coils).
I do think the OP may need to take some tabs though as had a bit of bad luck in the past and may not be too resistant to mozzie bites...
