dive master courses

Country forums / South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula / Philippines

hey all,
I'm looking to do my DM somewhere in PI. I'll be in the Malapasqua area for a bit but then I'm pretty much open to going anywhere. I hear palawan is pretty sweet for diving. anyone been?

anyone do their course in PI? got any Recommendations? I don't want to be with some big company that has 20 other trainees fighting to get on the boat and their dives in. or a big party scene, so i guess sabang is out. I'm looking for something small and relaxed but busy enough so I 'm not sitting around waiting, a place that does multiple sites and is also cheap for living costs. i have no problem pitching a tent to save on cash.

i'll be going there in september and will try to start my course at the end of the month. i read the best season is May, but hows oct-nov?
any chance in getting work there when i finish?

so if you have an island in mind, recommend a specific resort, or just have some useful tips i'd be most interested in hearing from yah.

cheers,
Mike

I would recommend my dive instructor to you because he trained me excellently, but he works more on a mentor program so I don't think that's what you're looking for.

I think the fastest way would be to go to Boracay or Puerto Galera. To get work after may or may not be easy. There are a lot of dive professionals in the Philippines, both local and foreign so I think it will come down to what we Filipinos like to call, "abilidad". People may correct me if I'm wrong but some resorts prefer to hire people who are instructor level, and they also prefer male - which is why I limited my divemastering work to weekends in Anilao as a side job.

Moalboal or Dauin would suit you, the Instructors at Atlantis Resort in Dauin are awesome, I went out diving with them several times.

They have a cool house reef, ghost pipefish and mandarin fish are not a rare sight :)

hey eliza,
i'd be interested in hearing about your mentor program. i'm not just looking to get my dive master but to really get into diving seriously, and that can't happen with one little program. It;s really important to do this with someone I respect, not as some dumb tourist with lots of money. I've worked in the outdoors back home and love it. I really want to make a go of it and work towards something. but i don't have endless resources to do everything i want, i'll need to get some work as a DM to pay the bills and all the gadrgets i need.

thanks for your post, hope to hear more from you,
Mike
