bird flu and indonesia

im heading to indonesia for 2 months starting 1st september would appreciate some advice please...............
whats the story with the bird flu .......is it still ok to travel?

I travelled for 5.5 months in Indonesia last year and there were reports in the newspapers and on television about Indonesian people dying of the bird flu, but I did not worry about it. When your time is up, your time is up- no point worrying.

The story with the bird flu is that so far, there have been 104 cases out of which 83 died (according to WHO/MoH counting), most cases were from Java and Sumatra, recently, there were two cases in Bali. All patients had been dealing with sick chicken or other poultry before falling sick. The H5N1 virus does not have the potential to cause a flu epidemic amongst humans.

For you as a tourist it is very much ok to travel in Indonesia - just stay clear of poultry and make sure the chicken and eggs you eat are well cooked.
I have lived (and moved within the country to remote areas quite a lot) in Indonesia for the last nine months without any problems (related to bird flu, that is...).

As #2. There were outbreaks around Jakarta when I lived there, but we did not worry about as we did not go near chickens etc.
There is far more risk of a road accident or other illnesses than chicken flu.

Don't worry about the bird flu. The "problem" is way over-hyped here in the western world.

Unless there has been some update on this, last I heard the virus is present in the lungs of the birds and it is only possible to catch it if you are handling infected birds. Eating the meat is fine (since you don't eat the infected portion anyway). Bird flu was extremely hyped up in the western media and there has been no evidence that it can "jump" vectors (and this has been looked into well).
