advice/suggestions for diving or snorkelling in Sabah

Hi,
Sorry if this is a repeat of previous posts but ive arrived in KK. I was hoping to do an intro dive around Sipadan however that seems pretty unlikely!! Anyone any suggestions for solo backpacker to get diving (or snorkelling) in and around that area....best island? good companies? Good cheap accommodation? Should i just head for Semporna and see whats available?!

You can dive in Kudat now for reasonable price,

plenty of cheaper places to stay around there
