A recommended Hostel in Singapore?

Hi all

Can anyone recommend a hostel to stay in that they have stayed in recently in singapore?

Am happy to stay chinatown / little india / bungis area or pretty much any where as long as i', not in the middle of nowhere...but want a actual bit of feedback not just something i've read online or a guidebook...most ppl have given me nitemare bedbug stories?

Inn crown in little india is great. Superb travellers atmosphere. DO NOT go to Ah Chew in Bugis.

Sorry, typo. It is 'crowd' I think there are two locations now, we stayed at the one on Dunlop Street. A lot of people think this place is a bit trendy, but we had a great time in there. We had just come from India, where we spent 3 months in....ahem....dodgy accommodation, so to be honest I thought it was great.We looked at a few of the cheapest options in town, (hence the Ah Chew comment) and several of them were pretty grim if I am honest.

It's an option anyway, and if you time it right, it has cheap beer too.

hmmm dunno why that has been posted 3 times sorry for that, i just been on there website and for a double room it is SD$59 (£25.60 on todays exchange) per person per night, I take it this is very reasonable in singapore as i know its meant to be quite expensive there

I think that was more than when we were there, but I don't think it was a million miles off. We actually stayed in a double bed within a dorm, if that makes sense.

It's obviously not ideal as a couple but I guess it depends on how long you are staying.

Singapore is indeed an expensive country, particularly if you like a drink, but is in itself a pretty interesting place, especially if you head there after a period in some of the less well off asian countries. Loads of people hate singapore, and see it as shallow and commercial. I can see their point, but I still enjoyed my time there.

to be honnest i am looking forward to going ...we are going there after malaysia (so not the cheapest of the S.E Asia's countries) im looking forward to being in a big city style enviroment .... we are thinking of going there for only 2/3 days before heading south to indonesia. as any longer we would be taking a big hit on our overall budget as we want to stay out there for as long as possible.

I'd say that's perfect. We were there for 5 days, and we were just beginning to run out of unique things to do.

Musts I would say are:
Zoo and Night safari, obviously. I would say do both, entirely different experiences.
Orchard Road- Capitalism at it's zenith, you will love it or hate it intensely.
Chinatown. Very pretty.
Food. Hawker Centres etc. you can eat anything.

We really did not enjoy Sentosa. Even for Singapore that place was crass, and my wallet felt sore afterwards.

Paradoxically, as a city it is an amazing place for a night out, however you may have to sell a kidney to afford it. I went out for the night to Clarke Quay with SD$100 and had to stop and get another SD$50 out halfway through. But hey, you don't get to do it often, so sometimes you just have to say to hell with it.

Other than that just walk around and explore. It is unbelievably safe as a country/city, so just roam.

Incidentally, you mentioned some other SE asian countries, are you planning to go to Viet Nam? I absolutely loved it.

Yeah we are heading to thailand laos onto Vietnam and possibly cambodia, so when did you go there or are you out there now?

We were in Vietnam in May 2008, and spent a month there. Our rtw ticket was fly in- fly out from the same airport type of deal, and our visa did not allow re-entry, but would have loved to go to Cambodia. Everyone we met in Vietnam also spoke very highly of Laos.

You will love it. People are just amazing.

You out there now? if so, how was Malaysia? we were doing the stopover thing in Singapore before flying to Hong Kong, so we never got to go.

no we fly to Kuala Lumpur end of january we are just trying to plan our route as best as possible (but oviously allowing it to change if need be) this will be our first time travelling so its all new to us and approaching it with our eyes wide open, cant wait to leave the misurable U.K weather lol

We were the same, first time travelling after years of 9-5 in Birmingham, and first off spent 3 months in India, which was quite a shock. SE asia is brilliant though. One thing I regret is not doing the overland thing between Vietnam and Singapore.

You are doing the right thing-best thing I've ever done, got some stories now. One piece of advice- plan as little as possible. Most plans will change when you're out there anyway.

yeah we have just planned a rough route we are gonna go for but not actually decided what we are going to do as such, well not in great detail.
