im thinking of doing it not because i can't spare $2 for the bus ride, haha, but just wanted to try it.

thanks!! and anyone knows of a nice place around or near johor bahru? might stay for 2 days before coming back to singapore, so i'm thinking other small towns..

I know that there is a walkway...and there are people who walk it (it's about 1km). Th only backpacker place in JB that I know of is a spot called "Footloose" Homestay 4H Jalan Ismail 07/224-2881 not far from the KutaRaya Terminal in the downtown. Walk back over the hill to Jl. Khalid Abdullah, then down that street to Jl. Air Mulik, turn right and go about 400 meters opposite some Catholic parochial schools. Jl. Ismail is just directly opposite these, with a warung on the corner. Ask the manager of Footloose where Warung Saga is - great food there. Most of the other spots are fancier...or spartan hotels.

Your other option is to head up to the beaches at Mersing (130 km north of JB) which is the jumping off point for Tioman Island.

thanks for the reply! i still cant find any detailed info in the net about the border crossing, so might just take the bus. im leaving tomorrow.

i even found some information that its not allowed to do the crossing by foot along the causeway bridge. not sure how true is that..

You can even combine a swim with the crossing. Multi tasking and all that...

Don't take the bus, costs money.

It is no longer possible after they moved the check-point at the causeway further north to Bukit Chagar. You can still walk it half way from the Singpore side till the big No Pedestrian sign posted midway on the causeway.

See JB on google map - JB satellite map. . The map is not up-to-date. That big patch of red earth above the train station is the location of the new CIQ building.

HW, it's not about being skinflint to take the public transport. I did it several times in the past. The border is open 24hrs. and after a late dinner at the hawker stalls near the police station, it was a nice stroll along the causeway before boarding a bus in Woodlands. It is a shame that this is no longer possible.
