Ching Hotel. SGD 65 for a double aircon clean room. Walking distance to MRT and plenty of taxis also around. Little India. Stayed there just 10 days ago.

Thanks everyone for the really thoughtful replies. In case anyone else is looking for a similar place to stay I thought I'd reply with some feedback. We ended up staying at the south east asia hotel. Even though I booked 7 weeks ahead most of the budget places didn't have availability for the 3 nights we needed so my advice is book as soon as you possibly can. We were very happy with the south east asia hotel. It was $100 a night for a twin. They have twin superior rooms for $110 and I'd say it probably was worth the extra money - the room was much larger with a small sitting area and the bathroom was larger which made it a bit easier for Mum. However, we were very happy with both rooms we had, were happy with the service, the rooms were fairly clean. The aircon was good, plus there was a fan. No complaints really. I was pleased though that I'd read about the breakfast system in advance as otherwise we wouldn't have known - there is a buffet which has things like instant noodles and a small selection of other asian type breakfast items, or you can request toast which comes with jam and coffee. You can't have toast and something from the buffet but this isn't clear. Fortunately we knew this. You have to ask at the hatch for your toast. The location of the hotel was good and taxi's are cheap so actually in hindsight proximity to MRT/bus wasn't so important. Taxi fares varied greatly and we weren't really clear why. Obviously there are peak times, but even still the different was huge. That's a bit of an aside really. The hotel is in between two well known temples, so we found it easy to get a taxi back there even if the driver didn't know of the hotel. There is a hawker centre within a couple of minutes walk of the hotel - very cheap food, although largely fried food as someone did warn us. One thing I would say though is the hotel is on a pedestrian mall so you can't be dropped right outside with your bags. This might be a problem for people with reduced mobility. It wasn't far though from where the taxi dropped us to the hotel. I hope this is helpful to someone. Thanks again for all the really helpful suggestions.
