I have an overnight stopover in Singapore and after somewhere cheap - around $60 SG- for one night. What are the Fragrance and Hotel 81 hotels like? (Are the ones in Geylang "by the hour" hotels????) Any recommendations appreciated.
i've stayed in hotel81 franchises, they are pretty good, basic, economical hotels. i'm not sure if it was fragrance, or one of the other franchises. they are not (to my knowledge) by the hour. i would stay there again, no problem

The Regin is better than Hotel81 or Fragrance chains.
$65 for single room (Mon-Fri). and u can walk there from the Kallang MRT (5-6 mins)
Hotel81 and Frangrance hotels are pretty good in general. Basic and usually clean.
If it is for just night, you can consider staying at one of the many many hostels in Sg, especially in the Chinatown Area.

I stayed in either the Hotel 81 Star or Palace about 10 years ago (can't remember which one) and would certainly stay there again.
Fragrance is fine...and Geylang is safe enough too,if a little boring and far from the centre.
Agree with the above, but surrounding area isn't much fun, friendly or inspiring. I've stayed at 2 Fragrances. Both were good.

Hi. I am a Singaporean. Both Hotel 81 & Fragrance chain of hotels are reasonably priced. they have many Hotels spread all over Singapore. Unless you enjoy the colors of red-light district, avoid those along Geylang road. Hotel 81 Selegie is ideally situated in a central location with many attractions. I would recommend this branch.
Hope this helps.
cheers
The Hotel 81 hotels in Geylang are basic but more than adequate - I've stayed there many times. It is still a red-light district but it has been cleaned up almost to the extreme - certainly nothing you will find offensive. Lots of small, cheap, good food restaurants in the area. If you are going sight seeing, the MRT is a short walk away. You can take the train to anywhere in a short time.
The hotels in the "nicer areas" are more expensive - and you get nothing extra in terms of quality of room.

They are not exactly by-the-hours but do get used as such at times. However compared to other countries Singapore has an almost "sterile" standard of sleazy. That said, I do agree with the poster above when saying you could take the one in Selegie, you could to nearly anywhere in the city center which gives you one long walk(perhaps?) at night or in the morning.
