When we (family of 5) fly into Singapore this july around 5:30pm we will be looking to catch the train up to KL. Given that it is considerably cheaper to take the train from Johor Baru instead of Singapore, can anyone advise how complicated and how long it would take me to get to from Changi airport to the JB train station.

Assume I could take the metro to the northern most point and then...cab it into Malaysia?
would then cost of this negate the extra fee I'd pay if I left from Singapore instead.

Thanks...

Not complicated, but it will take at least for you to stay an overnight somewhere in Singapore, at a hotel or somewhere that will accept 5.

Either a connecting room, or a 2 bedroom serviced apartment.

No way can you make it to Johor Bahru train station.

Getting a taxi from (larger taxi) from Changi to the bus station will take some time, and then the SBS Bus #170, either from the city centre or from one of the MRT stations to Larkin, will also take some time, and then from Larkin getting to the JB railway station will also take time.

While Singapore is efficient, once you get across the border, things work at their own pace, so to speak.

If you give it an overnight stay in Singapore, you don't have to rush. But if you try to get across to JB railway station by 9pm, I say you will not make it.

For a party of 5, going aorund by taxi is better, esp from Changi to city/that MRT station where the #170 goes from to Larkin.

A taxi might, MIGHT being the operative word, might be able to take you all the way to JB railway station, but that is a grey area, I have not done it, (but have been to Singapore) many times. Some pages on google say yes, the Singapore taxi can take you all the way, but $$$, others say no.

Best solution: book a larger hotel room or an interconnecting room hotel in Singapore, enjoy Singapore for that one night, then go up about lunch time or early morning, say 11am that day to make it across the border.

Judge for yourself.

To sum up, I say you will not be able to make it that same night.

There is a night train that leaves KL at about 9 PM, gets to JB around 10 PM, then on to KL and points north. It seems reasonable to take the MRT from Changi to the bus station to catch the #170, then that takes you into JB (cheap), then taxi to the JB train station. You would have plenty of time to get that train if you arrive in Singapore at 5:30. Getting lodging in Singapore is expensive, especially if you are a family of five. It would cost much less to take the night train out of Singapore than getting a hotel, and cheaper yet to get to JB and get the train from there. You could probably take a taxi from Singapore to Malaysia, but I haven't done this and don't know what would be involved. Taking the bus, though, takes less than an hour, and that includes going through customs.

If you feel you can get to Johor Bahru Train Station by 22:13 Malaysia time, give it a try.

Personally, I would give it the next day.

But hey, everyone has the right to their own opinions.

OP, I have done the Changi Airport to Johore Bahru train station journey many times. (Once upon a time, it was significantly cheaper to fly KUL-LHR than SIN-LHR on SIA.)

  1. Take the MRT from Changi Terminal 2 to Kranji Station.

  2. Leave Kranji MRT station and walk to the other side of the road using an overhead bridge to catch the Yellow bus (or Bus 170 or 160) to the border,
Make sure you keep the bus ticket.

  3. Clear SIngapore Immigration and then show your bus ticket and reboard the bus to take you across the causeway.

  4. Clear Malaysian Immigration.

  5. Walk from the Immigration check point to the Johore Bahru Train Station.

The whole journey from aircraft to train station takes an average of 2 hours.
You may have up to 5 hours to spare.

You can leave your luggage with the newagent who charges RM2 to RM5 for storage.

Then walk over the overhead bridge to the shopping complex for meals or even catch the latest movie for a pittance.

Good luck.

Concur with Penfold, 2 to 2.5 hours, travelling the way he described. Another route is MRT to Newton station (NS21) and then bus #170 to the border, and across the causeway.

But you may not have to do this.
According to this post by noalwa07 if you have prebooked tickets out of Johor Bahru, you can still catch the same train at Singapore station and just buy 5 of the cheapest seats from SIN to Johor Bahru. If you are after 5 sleeper berths out of Johor Bahru u will have to book them in advance. After u clear Malaysian immigr/customs just re-board the train and head for your prebooked sleeper berths.

Suggest you PM noalwa07 and see how they went about it. In his post noalwa07 obviously mistakes Kota Bahru for Johor Bahru.

Wow.
It's been a while since I used LP TT and I had forgotten how useful it was.
Still taking some time to get used to the new format, but thanks to everyone. Can't wait to get back on the open road...

I am not trying to make you disappointed. But I'm a local, I can tell you it might not takes you 2 hours to cross the causeway to Malaysia these days. Why?
Cos the Singapore Police is still trying to find 'Mas Selamat Kastari' who was being charged as a TERRORIST, who escaped from his detention centre since 28 Feb 2008.
http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/Singapore/STIStory_212432.html
As he is still in the large (as what the police believe) they are doing a very detail check at the customs, especially the Singapore-Malaysia border.

Personally I didn't go to Johore lately, but I heard from a friend of mine who went to Johore the other night. They spent 5 hours at the border.
So just want you to be prepare for the long hours.

Therefore the best choice is either go Johore the next day, and maybe you can spend half a day around JB before going on the train.

............and the Indonesian terrorist, Mas Selamat Kastari escaped Singapore on a boat to Batam, Indonesia while all the brave Singapore coppers checked every car, train, plane, bus and every pedestrain heading to Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

Singapore really hates Malaysia.

Anyway, why would a terrorist go to Johore, Malaysia where the more efficient Malaysian Polis would probably arrest him just to embarrass Singapore?

How did a terrorist escape from a Singapore jail? PM Lee junior must answer this question. Ex PM Lee senior should give him a spanking of a life time.

I took the train last Thursday between Singapore and JB - took less than 30 minutes to clear customs and back on the train. Two weeks previously, it took about 1 hour 30 minutes, which is the longest that I have had to spend waiting while they searched the train. They now are using fingerprint scanners at the Singapore immigration, so that seemed to have sped things up quite a bit there.

Singapore hates Malaysia but I think that they hate Indonesia even more. Malaysia also hates Indonesia so at least they have that in common with each other. Why can't people just learn to get along?...
