Hi! I'm planning to travel around the Philippines during the last 3 weeks of January, staying in hostels or cheap to midrange hotels. Should I make reservations ahead of time? I'd prefer not to, to keep my itinerary flexible. Thanks!

I am making preparations now for my trip in January. Apparently, the only time you really need to make plans far in advance is if you are anywhere in the vicinity of the big festivals -- Ati Atihan or Sinulog. Otherwise, it seems wide open.

Get a local SIM card to call ahead to check to see if somewhere is ful!, although they almost always won't be, especially lower-end places. Sometimes you can get surprised not just with festivals, but when a place is fully booked with a convention of Koreans or Filipino coffee salespeople or something,
