Hi all,
I know these topics are always met with scorn but thought I would ask anyway. There seems to have been a couple of new warnings relating to the Philippines. There was the US one back in Nov about southern Cebu, they have since put out a more specific one on the Sulu Sea (including south Palawan) which seems to be aimed more at sailors. The UK put out a more specific one in the last week and this specifically mentions several of the popular places in southern Cebu (eg Oslob and Siquijour) and Southern Palawan.
Do any of those on this thread that live in the regions or visiting frequently feel any differences in tension or extra security?
We have just arrived in Cebu and trying to decide on where to visit (made no plans before coming here). Bohol and South Palawan were our main ideas but now thinking of switching to northern cebu islands - we really just want to laze on beaches and snorkel. Appreciate any thoughts on this.

I know plenty of people who live in both Oslob and Siquijor, both of which locations had a slightly higher police presence for a few days which were posted there to make people feel more secure.
The general consensus from my friends in those areas was it was quite laughable that these areas might be targeted for anything (being a lot tougher targets than many other places in the region) and everyone has continued life as normal.
Having said that, if you want nice beaches, the north of Cebu is the direction to head in, especially Malapascua

Regarding the Sulu Sea, there's possibly a tiny risk there if you went out on a boat far from shore flashing money around and showing off. That's not something I would try but anywhere where you're around people and tourist area you will be fine.

I have just returned from visiting Siquijor and passing through Oslob twice in the last few weeks. Everything seemed safe and normal and no reason to be concerned. The Sulu sea and archipelago is are more dangerous areas. I think the south of Palawan Island would be fine, but I haven't been there for many years. Since Duterte, the streets are noticeably less dodgy at night. There is a 10 or 11pm? curfew for teenagers and students, and a 2am curfew for adults, but it doesn't seem to be strictly enforced, especially for foreigners.

I appreciate all the responses, we have headed north for the time being. I am not sure where "apparently" and "probably" fit in the equation but I appreciate all the feedback.
As some one who has been the victim of wrong place wrong time on a couple of occasions now I have started taking these warnings more seriously than previously. Sounds like the local authorities have taken plenty of action whether they believe it is justified or not so that can only be a positive.
Just saw another travel article (completely subjective) which had Philippines at the same level of Nicaragua and Honduras. Not sure if that is right or not but I have been to both those places and care is definitely required.
Thanks again
