Hi
In desperate need of some help on trying to plan a last minute month long trip or little longer to phillipnes. we are in china and are heading to philipines through hong kong. we dont know where to fly to MANILA or CEBU. our main interest in going to the phillipines would be the beaches, the countryside(vocanoes, treks and other outdoor activites), and maybe minority cultures but mostly beaches. we will be heading south to borneo after phillipines so any exit routes would also be appreciated.
thanks alot for any help offered.
JO.........

plenty of beaches on cebu and across to bohol. you can fly or boat from zamboagna to sandakan (borneo). fast boat out of zamboagna. slow boat from cebu zamboagna sandakan.

Yes the beaches around Cebu (Bohol, Bantayan, etc) are nice.
You can fly either to Manila/Clark or Cebu. Cebu Pacific is offering very cheap flights now since it's low season. You can simply fly from one island to another domestically.
So you can fly to Cebu then fly to Manila.
Air Asia flies KL and KK and other parts of Borneo from Clark at really low prices.
The ship route from Zamboanga to Sandakan is quite a "challenge". It is good for the sake of experiencing it. I took it about 5 years ago since there were no other cheaper alternatives that time........ return ticket to KK that time easily costs 400 to 500 USD! can you imagine that. If you are lucky now, you can fly out to KK/KL at 30 to 50 USD depending on your luck.
In Manila/Luzon, Puerto galera... white sands, small la laguna, big la laguna are recommended. Sabang is good only for the night life ( just my opinion :)
There is a little hiking in Puerto Galera too. The "Mangyans", our indigenous people, are residing around the area. I suggest you coordinate with the locals. I am not promoting them for the sake of tourism but I understand that need we travelers have in wanting to interact with them.
You can visit Tagaytay, an hour and a half drive from Manila. There's one small volcano surrounded by a lake, Taal volcano. Cross the lake on our local boats (banca) and can do some trekking from there. You can find guides from Tagaytay, you won't miss the signages.
Good luck to you and enjoy your trip here! Appreciate your making the Philippines a stop over.

The best beaches and dive sites are located in the Visayas Region in which Cebu is the hub of both air and sea transport.
Check flight schedules (domestic and international) of Mactan-Cebu Airport
http://www.mactan-cebuairport.com.ph/

From Cebu, you can take a plane to Caticlan (for Boracay Island), Siargao Island (for surfing), the volcanic island of Camiguin (hot springs and beaches). The nearby Bohol province and its outlaying islands are known for its excellent dive sites, beaches, historic sites and natural wonders. You can get there by ferry and plane from Cebu. North of Cebu is Bantayan Island which is also a beach destination.
You can then get a connecting flight Zambaonga City and Sandakan, Borneo via Asian Spirit

also check out
www.superferry.com.ph for ferries - you can cruise for 2/3 days through the islands with either berths in a dorm, a cabin or a stateroom plus book online, there are 7000 plus Philippine islands and as well as seeing these you get to see Philippine life close up

As for where to go - work your way back through the threads

OP
If I understand your question correctly, you are looking for the better air connection point into and out of Phils, right?
Both cities have good service from Hong Kong. The advantage of Cebu is its central location. After all, if it was good enough for Magellan, should it not be good enough for us subsequent explorers?
