As a Filipina (or part-Filipina), I ask that travelers do not go to girlie bars/prostitutes as part of some "vacation." You contribute economically to a system that provides dead-end employment for Filipinas, and puts them at risk for disease (including AIDS), among other things. It's also socially isolating in the PH, to be a prostitute/exotic dancer.

I realize that people will do what they wish. I realize that Filipinos also patronize these places, not just foreigners. I don't mean to just single out foreigners.

I generally stay out of the girlie bar threads on here. I hate them, but I stay out of it. But on this thread, it doesn't feel right to me to be silent since I've participated so much in this discussion so far.

Also, it's not only upsetting to me personally, but these thoughts echo the thoughts of many many Filipinos I've spoken to about it. Including Filipino members of the Thorntree. At least one Filpina poster I correspond with went to another chatboard permanently because of this type of stuff on here. Like me, I think they generally just don't want to get into dead-end arguments.

My 2 cents.

When I read your post and recognized it as a widespread attitude maintained by millions of people, not just Filipinos, I thought I'd contribute some food for thought in regards to prostitution, in general, but especially here in S.E. Asia and the Philippines. I guess my main points have to do with relativity, practicality, political correctness, and religious based judgemental morality.

Everything is relative, Filipina bar girls are NOT isolated nor is it universally "dead end employment". They have a whole network of friends and relatives who participate in this type of making a living. Maybe 50% to 75% of the bar girl population are single Mother's who were rejected by their local boyfriends as being worthy of marriage so due to the Catholic culture lost face in their local barrios left their baby with their parents or family and took off the lights of the big city seeking escape from religious based criticism and possible realization of dreams of finding a man who will love and respect them for who they are. Quite a fair number of them, who knows maybe 5% to 10% of them end of marrying foreigners, or getting hired overseas and leaving the country to earn significantly higher incomes. Compared to a straight educated hardworking Filipina office or salesgirl I'd say they do at least as well if not better financially than the majority of employees.

These bargirls are practical coming to the conclusion as the fine line between satisfying their hormonal needs with local single Filipino guys their own age who say ANYTHING, an ever growing variety of words of endearment, like most guys do to get laid and getting paid by usually older or married guys for the same sexual acts of pleasure.

It seems that almost everything with any sort of previous historical stigma attached to it has been put through the political correctness gauntlet thereby uplifting it to a respectful place in conversation or printed word. So I really do WONDER WHY prostitution has NOT YET demanded the SAME from society placing the common words, "whore" "puta" and "prostitute' with all the derogatory ethnicity words I don't need to write since you all know them. Such politically correct jargon like Sexual therapist, Sexual Consultant, Sexual Care Giver, Pleasure Giver or any other suggestions welcome to REPLACE the old words.

The religious based morality of this issue is quite a confusing issue as Jesus' famous line when the locals were about ready to stone the prostitute to death,"let ye who have not sinned throw the first stone" is so well known as is, "sin is sin" meaning that committing adultery is on the same level of SIN as is judging others. Another issue is these Filipina bargirls more often than not probably 80% or more of them are NOT doing this kind of work for their own personal gain nor to finance some kind of drug habit as is common in western countries BUT are doing it to HELP SUPPORT their baby and their POOR LOW INCOME often uneducated FAMILY .

My 2 cents.

Asia Bill wins the final set 6-0 and the match 3 sets to love. Sorry Brooklyn (child of Beckham I imagine by the level of intellect evident in your posts?) but your posts are infantile.

My 2 Cents

#15, while I agree mostly with what Bill posted, Brooklyn has a right to post her point of view as well.
I don't regard her reply as infantile. It's a point of view, that's all.

I was going to post my 2 pence (British you see, we don't have cents), but as the OP assures us he won't be going to any girly bars, I won't bother.
Except to say, as someone who has been to many girly bars, (in the cause of my investigative journalism!), you can go in for a drink, and if you want, a chat. You are under no obligation to buy a "take away"......
