I will be in Ormoc this Dec/Jan for a short stay. I need to maximize time when I am there so I want to have a car service available to me for a a few day long trips including Villaba, Tacloban, and Cuatro Islas. I have emailed the hotel (Ormoc Villa) but they do not reply. I need to know if I can reliably pick up a car service every day, for the whole day, at the hotel or nearby, or do I need to contract a service ahead of time via a travel agent. Thank you for any reply, I appreciate it. Also, which of the Cuatro Islas is better for snorkling? Best coral?

I'd be interested, too - always when it's about good snorkelling spots!
Islandsoft, in your profile you write that you're a novice traveller - don't you think you're going a bit too far off the beaten track for a novice traveller? Who's going to Leyte...? How did you pick exactly the Villa Ormoc, specially if they do not reply? Sorry I can't help as I haven't been to Leyte.
Look up the Eastern Samar website - maybe Martin has some more answers for you if you contact him.

hello Im from Tacloban, but divides my time between Quezon City and Tacloban. Last month I travelled to Biliran and Samar. On the contrary to wus statement, its a misnomer to think that these parts are too much for a novice traveller. There are alot of nice spots to see in Eastern Visayas. But in Ormoc I dont see much, except if you want to see Lake Danao. BIliran had 5 waterfalls, and pristine beaches of Samar all to myself.
I can help you with your other questions , but first Ide like to know why your going to stay in Ormoc? Why not stay in Tacloban, coz there are car rentals in there, and from Tacloban you can go to other points of Leyt, as well as Samar... but then again you might have mapped out your plans already... in any case, of youre willing to change your mind on a virtue of some suggestion, feel free to write back to me..
Pretty sure you will find it easy to arrange a car service once you get to Ormoc City, there's always a group of drivers touting for business at the Supercat terminal whenever a ferry arrives. Very easy to arrange a trip to Tacloban etc from here if you don’t want to get a van or bus from the bus terminal opposite the wharf.

Thanks to all.
In reply to some questions, my destination is Ormoc 'cause it is the closest to Villaba and subsequently Cagnocot.
I am travelling with my youngest son (15), stopping in Manila a few days to meet a young lady I have great hopes for, and visiting her family in Cagnocot.
My first desire was to stay at Sabin's Resort, but even in September they were booked up for Xmas/New Years.
Villa Ormoc looks like a good second choice, a little fancier, not on the beach (too bad), but looks nice.
I dont think Ormoc Villa is being smug by not answering. I think if the local person does not know the answer they are likely too shy to reply. I think there might be a great underlying fear of losing one's job and it's better in some people's minds to not make a mistake rather than risking a problem by exposing themselves to criticism by answering a question that is not in their manual. But hey, I could be wrong.
Samar, Biliran are on possible lists for future trips, though Ive found some stories on the web about army abuses in Samar. The LP book on the Philippines has so many great sounding, true local color places.
I think Im not interested in spending so much to visit a well worn path like Boracay, even if it is great.
Im also hoping to go to Dansol during the right season for the whale sharks. When I was a very youngin (maybe 4 - 5 ?), I really fell for whale sharks as a picture of one of my early books showed people swimming with them. What a thrill it would be to fulfill a true life long dream of doing the same.
But for now the immediate goal is to squeeze in a trip over Christmas break and make the most of it. Cuatro Islas is suppose to have 4 small lovely islands with great snorkelling because the reef is close to shore. Cuatro Islas short blurb

I have been to Ormoc a few times never had any luck at renting a car though but transport is cheap other hotel you can try is the Don Filip is about $20 US a night and found it to be good place to stay its right near where the super cat comes in. There is also the Pongos but on my own experience I would not not stay there again.
