I have been travelling from Manila by land though Bicol samar and Leyte and I am now in Bohol. The people have been wonderful. I am really touched by it. But selfish as I am.....
I just want to quote....

Personally I wish, being selfish, that all people would head off in other directions and leave the PI's alone. That way I could have those lovely Islands and their folks to myself.

I think our embassies tend to overdo the scare tactics, which I suspect is nothing more than CYA. If something did happen to one of their citizens then they can say "Well, we told you so!" and they haven't risked their jobs. Frankly, I pretty much disregard those warnings and rely on the local press and my own intuition. Even local people get caught up in this nonsense. Whenever I go to Mindanao even Filipino friends feel compelled to say "Be careful!". Cripes! Mindanao, most of it anyway, is probably safer than Luneta Park!
I'm a blonde female living in the Philippines for almost nine years now, and I agree with the above. Just take sensible precautions ( as you would anywhere) and read up about places where you intend to travel. Places like Boracay are very tourist friendly.

The OP will have no problems. She is blonde and 25 years old. Her husband will have lots of problems fighting off the local lothario's:)

Agree with the previous posts. The locals are wonderful and friendly but take usual precautions concerning street crime and scams. As previously mentioned the only places to avoid are regions with large muslim populations (e.g. Mindano)

Careful MrSteve - comments like these made in jest could be taken literally.

As a Black American, From June to July my son and myself stayed in Pagadian City, province of Zamgoanga del Sur. Before traveling there, we were warned by mostly American Filipinos, and Foreigners of the risks. Never in our stay did we feel unsafe, absolutely no plms..infact the Filipinos were very kind to us. We also visited Mindanao..We saw a couple of Foreigners, the Foreigners were the snuck-up unfriendly type, not the native Filipinos. Many times, I would travel alone without my Mahal..I had a wonderful time among the Filipino people visiting the schools, churches, their homes, was sad to leave.
