Hi friends!

I like to collect masks from different countries and different indigenous ppl. SO far I have collected masks from Kenya, Indonesia, Nepal, Tibet, Thailand, Australian aborigines, Indian tribes. As this is my first trip to Malaysia i'd like your advice where to buy masks in KL.
Thanks and Cheers!
Ank

Hi Ank,

I would check out Central Markets in KL for nice masks and variety. And good chance of getting them through customs!
But I thought the masks in Melaka were more interesting. (i bought a few). It's worth a day trip if you have time, lots of history and colourful architecture.
Cheers!

Sorry #1, the masks in Melaka and KL Central Market are mostly imported from Thailand and Indonesia. My apologies for the wet blanket. peninsula Malaysia is muslim populated and do not condone to mask crafting or even statues (haven't anyone wonder why there's very little human-like monuments in towns and cities?). Locals don't do masks - except Orang Asli aborigines. If you want something authentic, take a trip to Carey Island, about 2 hrs south-west KL, where the Mahmeri seafaring tribe lives. They're into animism, make beautiful masks and wood crafts from mangrove trees. The island is accessible by bridge at Teluk Panglima Garang or Pulau Indah.

There's a good shop near (but not inside) Central Market that has all kinds of things from Borneo where you'll surely find what you want. Can't remember the name of it or the name of the street it's on, but it's only a block away at the most on the Chinatown side of the market.
