Does anyone know if Kek Lok Si is always lit up at night or only on certain days of the week, or even only on special occasions??? Travelling to Malaysia in August and will be popping up to Penang.

Lights on only during Chinese New Year for a whole month. Sorry, not in August.
You can catch The Hungry Ghost Festival in Penang (from Aug 13th onwards for one month). If you are into culture - then come and join us in this festival - Chinese opera, puppet show etc.
August 31, 2007 (Merdeka Day) commemorates Malaysia's 50th year of independence. Join the enthusiastic crowd everywhere in the country on the eve of Merdeka Day for the countdown to this momentous event. In some places e.g. Kuala Lumpur, they usually have fireworks show. On Merdeka Day itself, there is a grand parade - Merdeka Day Parade.

Thanks JK.
Actually, the reason we are going to Malaysia in August is for Merdeka. 11 years ago my Mum, Dad, younger sister and I went to KL for the first time and way back then commented that wouldn't it be great to go back for the 50th year... And now here we are!
Good to know about the Hungry Ghost Festival - will do some research. Also, handy to know that celebrations of Merdeka start on 30th - guess that one's going to be a late night :o) Can't wait!!!

There would be stage shows and chinese opera performers and chinese puppet shows opposite a temple.
By the way, please dont sit on the front row of the seats. Those are reserved for the ghosts.
