I'd like to visit Tioman island. Judging from the pictures I've seen it looks a paradise island to me. However, I've got a couple of questions. Accommodation seem to be scarce on the island and its difficult to book anything in advance. Can I just turn up and find accom? Which areas are best to look for budget places? I'm not looking to party, but not to be on my own either. Ideally I'm looking for a place with a nice beach and good food places.
Thank you for your advice.

Loads of accommodation...usually no problem just turning up and finding something.

I like Juara,on the quieter east coast...nice beach but food options are more limited than on the more touristy west coast.

There is plenty of accomodation, no problem in turning up and finding something. I've stayed on most of the beaches, on the West coast Air Batang or ABC beach has lots of budget places and walking south from Tekek there are others. You need transportation to get to Juara on the East coast but I quite liked it there, stayed at Bushman. Basic but lovely bungalows directly on the beach, best location making both of the East coast beaches easily accessible.
All places have their own restaurants so we found there to be enough food choice. Bushman also offers very competitive transfer to Juara and back again to Tekek.

Oh that's good to know. Which beaches are the nicest on the island?
BTW, its my first tropical island. I've only been to Mallorca and Aegina in Greece. Is there anything to be cautious about? I've read sandflies is a problem in Juara.

In May I found sandflies to be a huge problem, especially on Juara and Salang beaches but I reckon it's hit and miss depending exactly when you go.

For a better website look at www.tioman.org, gives you lots of pictures of the different beaches.

@6, check out Pulau Rawa & Pulau Sibu.
I was on Tioman 2 years ago & didn't notice any problem with sandflies. Do note that it's seasonal.

So, what are the advantages of going there...the flies would be a no-no for me...

Nice snorkelling spots, jungle treks, sun-sea-sand and if you like your alcohol, it's a duty free island.
