Hi all
Just realised I've booked a flight by mistake to Tawau after looking at the location of the Maliau Basin and thinking that could be interesting!
However!, it's actually the Danum Valley and lower Kinabatangan areas I really want to see, is there anyone out there who has been to these locations Tawau , Maliau Basin and can recomend any tour operators and hotels in the area ASAP please!! As my flight is on Monday!

I've been to Tawau but can't remember where I stayed which isn't much help! However the town is really small so if you just get to the centre it's easy enough to look for accommodation. I've also been to Maliau but that was a few years ago. It's not cheap, and you have to have, or at least used to have, medical insurance that covers helicopter evacuation!
I have been to Tawau a number of times. It is as close to the Danum Valley turn off as any airport so it is not too much of a problem.
There are a number of buses tha go past the turn off each day so there is no problen getting there.
Most people enter the Danum Valley on a tour. You could try hitch hiking but you could also wait a long time. But you could also be taken to somewhere even better! I have spent many weeks hitch hiking in the jungle and it's a fantastic experience.
Just remember that the Danum Valley is super expensive by anyone's standards. I haven't been there, but people who have have said it is worth it.

you can only enter the field research centre by booking at their office in Lahad Datu!! you cannot just rock up or hitch hike in there!!
they dont normally allow ad hoc tourists as its primarily a research centre, when you book you have to pay for all meals thereof you can pay extra and have an agency take you ,
you dont see a great deal of wildlife etc , but its there , I was lucky & did! its like being in a nature programs!! do your research before going, accomodation is not particularly comfortable if its fully booked!
