Hi there!
My husband & I are planning to go to Perhentian Islands end of May to early June for abt 7 days with another family. Both of us have 2 kids each, aged : 15mths, 3 yrs, 4yrs & 5 yrs.
My friend's husband is into diving and both my hubby & I are into snorkelling. Besides that and swimming, are there any other activities? Such as canoeing, kayakking, river-rafting, jet-skiing, para-sailing ..... Are there any waterfalls in the jungle that we can trek to or any nice nature walk tracks that is worth venturing out to? How about other activities like batik painting or any other stuff ... for kids perhaps.
Also, which is better? ... the big or small island?
Can anyone recommend any chalet which is family friendly and not too expensive ... our budget from RM40-RM70 p/night. Any place to get a nice traditional Malay massage or ... ?
Thanks in advance.

Been to perhentian kecil, I found it not so suitable for children though, it is more backpackers' atmosphere there. However, Perhentian Besar has better hotels which more children friendly. But with your budget might be a bit difficult to get those accommodations.

Well actually we are backpackers. We've backpacked with our 4.5 yrs old daughter who will be 5 yrs old in July, since she was 5 mths old!
When she was 5 mths old, we took her snorkelling in Bintan island where we stay at Lobo's, a backpacker's place, then we went to Tioman island and again took her snorkelling and later to Genting for abit of relax and fun for her. We then travel around KL and Malacca.
Then when she was abt 2.5 yrs old we took her around Thailand, from central Bangkok, Ayuthaya, Kanchanburi all the way up to Chiang Mai & Golden Triangle crossing the Mekong river into Laos. We took her river raftting, elephant trekking and jungle trekking in both Kanchanaburi and Chiang Mai and visit the hill tribes, waterfall in both places! We also travel around Sukothai, Lopburi, Phitsanulok, Pattaya and finally Ko Samet where our youngest son who is 11mths now, was conceived! He'll be 15mths when we go to Perhentian islands in end May.
So how do u mean it's not suitable. Coz I always figure, if there's local people living there, they do have family and kids right, so if their kids are ok, well my kids should be ok too right? Of course I have to get the necessary jabs or bring along the mosquito/insect repellent & take other basic precaution .... but there's no real big danger, is there?
Anyway, any nice chalet. I heard Matahari is good?

hi precious gem,
I've been to Big & Small Island. For the small one, there's few good chalet type for you & kids. D'Lagoon is budget chalet and it has a shallow private beach. Range of price 40-80 (it was 2005). For the Big island, last year, i went for scuba in May. Me & my family stayed at Fauna beach resort. the food was nice (easter & western too). The chalet cost around 40-80 (80 with aircond). I'm planning to go there this coming May, again to Fauna with 3 others family with kids. See you there.
Hi
My wife and I went to Perhentian in March last year. We went to the big island and we had great fun snorkeling there even if there was not that much else to do. I have posted a trip report with pictures on my homepage gardkarlsen.com. Maybe you can find some useful info there :-)

hi ammirhafzan,
thanks for the info. btw, when in may r u going? We plan to take a night coach on the 28 May from JB to Jerteh than take a bus or taxi to Jerteh jetty. So we hope to take the first slow boat to the island on 29 May morning and stay there about a week then off to Kota Baru in Kelantan and later on KL before heading home.
Cheers!

Gard,
Thanks for the info and the websites, it sure helps alot. I see you really had a great time travelling around this region.
Anyway, I see that u r from Norway. I've never been there but I've been to Sweden and Denmark. That's the closest to Norway I got. Can still speak a little swedish though ...
Cheers!
