Hi all,

My mother and me are going to Penang this Thursday night (11/12/14) and returning this Sunday night (14/12/14). I have come up with an itinerary although I would be extremely open to suggestions.

Day 1 (11/12)

Arrive into Penang at 9.35pm
Head to hotel at about 10pm
Arrive hotel (in Bukit Mertajam) at about 10.30pm

Day 2 (12/12)

Leave hotel at 9am for Kek Lok Si
10am-11.30am Tour Kek Lok Si
Lunch at Kpg Bahru or Air Hitam (any suggestions)
1pm-3pm Tour Penang Hill (enough or too much time?)
Leave Penang hill for Street art
3.30-5.30pm Tour street art, light at, beach st etc
Leave for Times Sq.
Dinner and shopping at times sq.

Day 3(13/12)

Leave hotel at 9am for ESCAPE Theme Park at Teluk Bahang
9.40-2pm @ Theme Park (enough or too much time?)
Lunch at Teluk Bahang
3.15-4pm at Snake Temple
Leave for Gurney Drive
4.20-6pm shopping @ paragon and plaza
Dinner at Gurney hawker centre

Day 4 (14/12)

Morning 8am to afternoon 2pm Visiting some friends and relatives for breakfast and lunch.
After 2pm any suggestions? I'm thinking of touring around Bkt Mtjm before my flight at 10pm. What time do u think I have to leave for airport?

Would appreciate all suggestions.

Thanks...

KY

hi ky
it seems that you have done a lot of research and you have planned a very detailled itinerary, so maybe my question is silly: but do you really want to stay on the mainland (in bukit mertajam) and not on pulau penang ? all the things you plan to do and see are on the island, why not also stay there ? the way i read your post, you plan to visit friends and relatives on the mainland on day 4. i think it would be nicer and easier to stay on the island, and go the mainland on day for, than doing the opposite for 3 days.

obviously everybody has different interests etc. your itinerary would be too packed and shedulded for me. i have been to pulau penang several times, and for me, the 2 main highlights are georgetown and food. georgetown is a great mix of malay, chinese, indian and western buildings and culture. its a melting pot and so fascinating to walk around. i guess that is your plan on the afternoon of day 2. you can get great food everywhere, one of my favourite places is the night market in batu ferringhi (which is also a good place to stay at, on the beach, and not far from georgetown).

i hope that helps and have a nice trip with your mother.
cheers, nathalie

Hi Nathalie,
I'm actually staying at one of my relatives house in Bkt Mertajam and she will be touring us. I'm considering skipping the ESCAPE theme park and instead visit the Cheong Fatt tze and horse riding in Batu Ferringhi on day 2. Do you recommend any good eating places around Kek Lok Si?
Thanks,
KY

And why not allow flexibility by getting rid of the time frames. Otherwise all you'll be doing is looking at your watch waiting for the next activity. Its supposed to be a holiday, not a working schedule.

ah okay, that makes sense.

cheong fatt tze mansion is very beautiful, i would definitely prefer to visit the mansion that to go to the theme park (but i have to admit that i dont really like theme parks). sorry, no restaurant recommendation around kek lok si.

Hi Westwood,
Thanks, I agree with you about removing the time frames. Wouldn't want to be to stressed out about time lol...

Hi Nathalie,
How would you suggest I book to get in to the Peranakan Museum and Cheong Fatt Tze? Should I just turn up at that time or?

Trust me when I say plans often go wrong. Far better to have a list of things to see and then just cross them off as you go. I do know there is a really good walking trail around the Heritage sights of Georgetown.

In terms of sights in Old Georgetown- have a look at this article on the shophouses of Georgetown.
