My wife and I want to take a side trip (2 days, 1 night) from KL to the Cameron highlands. We will be there in the month of November too.

It seems its better/flexible to rent a car. Has anyone who visited by bus had transportation issues in the area? If giving input for a car, where are good specific places on the way or in the area to stop at?

If you drive you could stop and visit Ipoh's old town on the way. Other than that, all of the attractions are relatively near Tanah Rata. The road up is nice and you may find places you want to stop along the way - to view a waterfall, buy some fruit, or have a rest. It is a very windy road.

I would rent a car if I had the chance. When I visited Cameron Highlands I was lucky to meet some friends on my hostel who had a car and I could visit the tea plantations that way but if not, without a car, going to certain attractions is not easy or impossible. Other attractions are ok on foot, like some hiking routes and so on. Considering the little time you have, I would not doubt it and rent the car.

Enjoy your trip!

Actually you can visit the tea plantations using the local bus. It's a fun and cheap way of getting around. You get to walk from the road through the plantations to their tearoom/showroom/shop which is always lovely. And if you get stuck at all you can always hitch a ride from the friendly locals.
