Wondering if anyone has some good tips on where to stay in Ranau and Lahad Datu. In Ranau, we're looking to do some of the nature trails in around the park. And in Lahad Datu, we want to get into the jungle at either Danum Valley or Tabin. Does anyone have some good information on these areas that is NOT catered to the package short-term holiday tourist, but rather the broke traveller who just wants to see the sights. (I know, Sabah is the wrong place to be if you're running out of money!)
Thanks.

on a budget i would go to danum valley as they offer cheaper accomodation and food. as far as i remember you could even pitch your tent. of course, i am talking about danum valley conservation area, not rainforest resort. you can hike all by yourself, buy their little trail-map for very few bucks, or hire a guide. tabin has beautiful accomodation and surroundings and the staff is very sweet, but you might have to buy their whole packages nowadays- not cheap. as long as the tented platforms are not available at least.. and they used to be the monkeys playground the 2 times when i was there! but you could ask them. booking via pinganchorage is an option if you can`t get through, they are very reliable and quite competetive(just google them). enjoy!!
