Hello- we are planning to head to Sempora after a stay in the jungle when we are there in January. Whats the latest we can leave Sandakan? Ideally we would leave around 4pm to arrive in Sempora at 9ish. Not sure how frequent the public transport it.

Also- I am assuming it will be easy to arrive and book a standard 3D/2N jungle package on arrival for the following day rather than book in advance. We will be arriving on the 9th of January in the afternoon. Is it a particularly busy time of year? Does anyone recommend booking in advance?

thanks!

No idea, but it's about three hours by bus from Sandakan to Lahad Datu and another three hours from there to Semporna.

Where do you want to visit the jungle? If it's the Kinabatangan river, you can go there without a package (it's much cheaper):

I don't think you'll be able to take an overnight bus from Sandakan to Semporna. I was there last month and I think the bus departs at 7:30am and 2pm with Dyana Express (reliable).

For a jungle package on the kinabatangan I stayed with Balai Kito homestays. They're based in Sukau, right next to the river. You stay with a local family for 2 nights and they arrange boat cruises on the river. It's a great way of ensuring the money goes straight to the locals. The manager is also responsible for a number of conservation organisations. We had an amazing time, I can definitely recommend it.
