Wow, everyone! Thank-you for all your answers, after much deliberation (and admittedly before I saw some of these) I decided to book a hostel dorm room for 2 nights including my first "night" - just for the peace of mind - I'm actually very anxious about this trip (so much so that I don't want to go anymore! Crazy I know but just feeling a bit overwhelmed about leaving NZ after 2 years as well)

Anyway, I'm also realised it maybe a good idea to check with the hostel I'll be able to actually GET INTO my room at that time (if reception is closed) so then I may be back to the drawing board. Thanks!

Honestly, if you get a room at the airport, there would be no point as you wasted around RM200 - RM350 on a room. This is because by the time you have cleared the customs and all that, it'll be around 6.00 am. By the time you take a bus / taxi / train to KL, it'll be already 7.15 am (I know because I am a Malaysian 14-year-old with that kind of experience). By then you could already reach your hotel by 8.00 and the hotel manager / staff will allow you to check in to your room early (because we Malaysians pride ourselves with the top hospitality and customer service). And even if they don't, there is no point sleeping because the freaking Malaysian sun will wake you up no matter how much you feel like sleeping, so I would suggest going for a little sightseeing or going for breakfast at a local "mamak" where you can have loads of delicious foods such as roti canai, nasi lemak (coconut spicy rice), and teh Tarik (pulled tea) for some caffeine.

I'm arriving on January 5 at 3.15 am coming from Adelaide via Sydney. Haven't decided yet what I'm gonna do either. I thought of jumping on a train/bus to Singapore and work my way up via Melakka, Cameron Highlands, Langkawi, Penang and KL before I fly home 17 days later
